Does anyone know what National Health Service Corp is?

hello pam,

the national health service corps (nhsc), in regards to nursing, provides up to $50,000 (or the outstanding balance of qualifying student loans if it is less than $50,000), tax free, to primary care nurse practitioners in exchange for two years of service at an approved site in a health professional shortage area. upon completion of the service commitment, clinicians may be eligible to apply for additional support for extended service. clinicians, while serving in the nhsc loan repayment program, receive a salary from the site at which they are employed in addition to loan repayment.for rn’s who are considering additional training as a primary care nurse practitioner or certified nurse midwife, there are also scholarship opportunities through the nhsc.

two other programs you should be aware of are the nursing education loan repayment program http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/nursing/loanrepay.htm and the nurse scholarship program http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/nursing/scholarship/. these two programs offer either scholarships or loan repayment to nurses at a baccalaureate level in exchange for at least two years of service in a critical shortage facility. for more information about these two programs, use the links provided above.

Yes, you do receive a salary as well. I looked into this program when I first got out of NP school. The salary is not as high as some of the contracts you would be able to negotiate in the private sector though.
