Would anyone be willing to share their thoughts/experiences as a nurse with the VA Medical Center in Denver? I'm seriously considering working there, so I would appreciate your candid feedback, either via the board or by PM. Also, does anyone know what the starting wage for a new grad nurse is (roughly)?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi Semisweetchick ,

I'm happy to see your post as I am currently considering relocating to Denver. I will be graduating this May. I too would like to know more about working for the VA in this area. I've been so busy with school that I haven't had the chance to contact the nurse recruiter yet. Plus, being in a different time zone doesn't help. If you've found out any information, I would very much appreciate if you could add to this post or send me a PM.

Thanks so much!!!,

The starting salary is somewhere around 24/hr with a BSN, 5 weeks vacation per year (8 hrs per pay period), 4 hrs sick leave per pay period, govt holidays (paid if off and differential if working). Health benefits are the same as for govt employees.

I have been working there since August. I really love the staff I work with and the patients and their families are generally great to work with. You do have to deal with govt red tape and paperwork but overall it seems like a good place to work.

Thanks so, so much for sharing your experience! I am really hoping to get an interview there as a new grad and was interested to read your observations about the work environment.

Thanks again!
