Hello,

I was wondering if any of you have ever been employed as a nurse at SAMMC (formerly Brooke Army Medical Center) in San Antonio. I have been speaking with a private company that states they hold all the nursing contracts with the hospital for civilian nurses. Basically, they say they exclusively staff civilian nurses at the facility. If I were to take an RN position there through them, then I would be their employee and not an employee of SAMMC. I was wondering if there is any other route to be employed as a civilian RN at that hospital other than with this company. I don't have anything against the company, i just would feel more comfortable being a direct employee of the hospital. I have seen jobs at that hospital posted on cpol and USAJobs, but I am not sure how it works. Also, if you have worked there (or know what company i'm referring to) what are your thoughts on being a civilian RN at a military hospital and/or being employed by that company. Any info would be appreciated....Thanks in advance!

Civilian nursing jobs at military facilities are typically posted on usajobs.gov -- you might find something there. Good luck!

I worked at SAMMC ten years ago for 18 months and loved it.I worked on the ortho floor and found everyone great to work with.As a civilian RN probably working on an open ended contract with the company you mentioned I enjoyed working with the military staff and patients but happy in the knowledge that I could not be deployed to a war zone and be the object of enemy fire as the brave military people I was around, whatever my political beliefs were which swayed to the 'blood for oil'persuasion.I was working among friendly courageous people and knew it.The only way I know to work for the military facilities as an RN is as a private contractor as I did or joining the military as an RN and being subject to transfers at anytime, which could mean Seattle,San Diego,WashintonDC,or Germany or any other base around the world but I don,t think they give you the option of where or when and I don,t believe they pay well except for the excellent benefits.Hope that helped.

I am also trying to find employment at BAMC as a civilian. My husband is stationed there and it is convenient for me. I've been looking at USAjobs but I didn't see many openings. Then I went to the contracting agency website and saw that they have tons of job openings at BAMC. But, like you I rather be directly employed with BAMC than with a third party. If you find any additional info please share:) Thanks!

I think you fill find it very hard to get direct GS jobs right now at .mil hospitals. I would take the contracting job to be honest...

Hi, I have worked at SAMMC since 2007. I was military first, then contract for the agency you are speaking of. Because the hospital is department of defense you would need to be a government employee. The ONLY way to apply for those jobs is through USAJOBS.GOV

With that said, those positions are sometimes hard to come by. Sometimes they offer them quietly first to contractors that already work there.

I experienced this first hand as I was an employee for a year or so when I was informed a GS position would be available and I could be considered first to apply. I would recommend the contract agency to get your foot in the door. Once they love you in your workplace you are almost guaranteed to be offered the job when available. Hope that was helpful.
