Can you study to be an RN with the army without being shipped off to Iraq?

Sorry for my ignorance, but can a person sign up with the army and train to be a nurse and work as one -without having to travel overseas? I have a Bachelor's in Business and this is a second career for me. Among other reasons, that I won't go into, I have a newborn son that I would like to come home to each night.

Any info would be appreciated!

I served 9 years in the Army Nurse Corps. I can almost guarantee as a new 2LT on active duty, you will not be home every night. As low man on the totem pole, you are given the opportunity to work plenty of evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as well as the opportunity to deploy with some units with as little as 72 hours notice. Once I started my family is when I pursued a civilian nursing career. I wouldn't change a thing-it was a wonderful opportunity to serve my country. Also keep in mind that not all spouses have what it takes to be a military spouse and deal with the long separations and single parenting for months at a time. Good luck in your decision.

well said. That is a very separate and important concern. Not all spouses can hack it as military dependents. It's not for everyone. You have to be "in it" together, that is for sure.
