Hi there,

Just the latest update from communications from my recruiter.

[pasting my post from a just written reply]

Well, found out today that I will not be able to amend my date to ship until it is time to ship, (however I will not know when that time is before August 2007 and it maybe September or it may be January 2008).

Much as I hhhaaate to do it, I sent my request for release from IRR and my sustainment status for the Army Nurse Corps. The reasons are for financial hardship and academic timeline completion of June 2008. There is not a chance that I can afford to sit in limbo with student loans due and rent and so forth, until Jan 2008 and most hospitals require new grads to sign a contract for more than the 5 months I'd need to make the Jan 2008 OBLC.

Also, since I have time until Jan I added the FNP certificate to my courses in order to hold my loans in deferrment AND earn the FNP.

It is a waste of all that hard work everyone did, which will only need to be repeated all over again, pretty much right away.

p.s. thanks for listening

p.p.s. since I am on IRR and do not have duty assignment or orders or even anticipate them I chose the DoD 1332.30, (was that right or will I need to re-send an updated letter?)

Sorry to hear that Gen, I've been reading your journey into this and I know you were so ready!!! So what are you going to do now??

Hi,

I have to work.

After having been a full time student for the most of the last 8 years, I have to bring in some cash.

My recruiter's supervisor asked me to wait and re-try to request the change of ship date after I take NCLEX-RN before he sends the release letter.

I agreed, because I would end up re-applying anyhow but, I cannot afford the Army right now.

Initially I applied under the student status but, didn't make it and now I just cannot afford the costs of transitioning into the Army any more than I could afford a new car or house!

The whole student status and funds are feeling overwhelming now. I only have one more quarter and I really don't know how I can make my rent any more...I know, it is tough all over but adding to this the thought of affording a relocation after limbo for six months is insane.

Top that off and I do not know how I can afford the 279. test fee or fingerprint fee in the first place!

I need to work right now. I hope to work as a tech maybe for about six months to try to get on my feet a bit and then maybe afford to test NCLEX.

Will see.

Hi Gen - You're not taking the NCLEX right away? Maybe I misunderstood. That would then give you the option of working as an RN and making more $$$. I'm sure I'm not understanding why you're delaying the NCLEX.

Stafford Loans are low interest with re-pay set-up for 6 months out of school.

... just a thought

Hello TraumaRUs,

The reason I am delaying it is because I will need to work and make some money so that I can afford to pay for the test.

It costs $279. just to register for the test. I do not know yet what the cost of fingerprinting is. They are out of my league, especially right now that my student loan funds are gone and I cannot make rent and it is only March, (I know, I know, it is tough for all students...I understand...).

I will not have that money to spare until I am working, hopefully I get a tech job so I can bring money in.

Thoughts on Stafford Loans, or other financial assistance?

Sorry to hear this Gen. I know at least one of my nursing school classmates was in a tough financial situation and a state worker assistance group paid for her NCLEX. Worth looking in to.

Could you not get a signature loan at your bank to cover the cost? I know you don't want any more loans but that way when u pass u can get a job as an RN and practically pay that loan off with your first 2 paychecks without having all that interest. I would apply for the loan at least 30 days before you take the NCLEX.

If you get a job at the hospital will they not pay you to take the NCLEX? See if human resources or your school has emergency loans. Most places have that they give you like up to 500 on a loan but it needs to be paid back within 90-180 days.

Sorry everything is not looking up right now. It will get better. Look into your unemployment commission in your state too. They usually have ways to deal with situations like this. They may have a program you can be under for something like this or they may have a community resource they can refer you too.

Thank you and I agree it will definately get better. I am just at that "hump" stage, like all students. :)

IU95, thank you too, I know things are really good, in perspective...just got to wait.

Hopefully the Army will either allow me to change my ship and not mind that I won't be testing for NCLEX anytime soon.

This just feels like the longest degree coming...

My .02 cents. I would get a job as a Grad nurse somewhere, sign their contract, don't tell them about your Army deal. Rather tell them you're are in the IRR and that getting called up is a remote possibility, which is true for the IRR. They can not descrimminate against you for your reserve status. Anyway, start working, get the money for the test and then once you pass and get your license and the Army situation is all worked out, go to your employer with the soldiers and sailors act and say "bye." You can't be held responsible for breach of contract for being called up to active duty. Hell, monies tight here too, but I got $20 that's yours to help with paying your fee, who else will chip in, we've all been there? If you're interested PM me and I'll help walk you through the Grad nurse thing, you're closer to being a nurse than you think.

Okay I am off to school and approaching the final exam week which brings us to our FINAL QUARTER of our program.

It will be a-okay I am sure.

Gen

p.s. just have to focus on this week ahead before I can even put energy to even the near future
