Hi there!

I will be graduating from ADN school in May and have a few questions....

I've gotten a few different responses, so I was wondering if someone could clarify.

Do you have to have a BSN for AFR?

If you don't, will they help you get it?

I appreciate any help you guys can give!

Thanks

You have to have at least a BSN for AFR or AD. The only uniformed service that will allow you to come in with an ADN is the Army Reserves.

When did they change that? The AF Reserves used to accept Diplomas or ADN. However, if you wanted to advance it was better to have a BSN. I would check with a recruiter. They have all of the answers.

You got me....I have no idea when it changed, but I have been AD AF for 6 yrs now, and as far as I know it has been that way the whole time.

Qualifications:

* Must be a U.S. citizen between the ages of 18 and 47

* Must be a Licensed Registered Nurse

* Be in your Senior year or a graduate of an approved B.S.N. or B.A.N from an accredited National League of Nursing (NLN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCN) program

http://afreserve.com/hp/nurses.asp (that nursing page doesn't tell what the requirements are but there is a recruiter contact page)

I think the current system works quite well this way...there is much more professional solidatary without someone saying that BSNs are better than ADNs/Diplomas grads etc.

The uniformed services have the highest percentage of advance degree nurses than any other large organization that I know of and if going through RN-BSN program puts you off then you would definitey feel out of place in the AF where they expect you to have your Masters degree before you make Major.

Thank you all so much for your fast replies!

I really want to go Air Force Reserves, and I eventually wanted to get my BSN, but it will probably take a while.

Does anyone know if they would help me through a BSN program, or do I just have to wait to sign on until after I get it?

I am waiting on a phone call from the Health Care Recruiter to talk about it, I was just really hoping someone else could tell me. I really hate waiting when I have questions!

I was originally looking into it because I am the President of our Nursing Student Association, and I was going to try to get a recruiter to come talk to us at a meeting. One of my fellow students told me that he was told they would take ADN. It doesn't clarify on the website.

I guess I'll find out for sure when I get a call back!

Thanks yall, for your answers!!

Nurse Nini:

It looks like they will take you IF you are in your senior year of BSN. A few years ago I did talk to a AF recruiter and they told me the same thing... But I'm sure if they had to choose between someone with the BSN or someone almost a BSN, they will choose the BSN. It is worth a shot!!! Good luck, I hope that you get to talk to a recruiter soon!!!

I know it is hard to sit around idle and wait for answers... take care...

Interesting that is not what I had been told in the past, but good to know. I actually just did an online chat with one of ANG advisors and he confirmed it, but no word on the AF Reserves. He wasn't sure so now that my curiosity is peeked I sent the AF Reserve recruiter an email to see if it is the same requirements.

They are supposed to respond in 24hrs so I will post the response as soon as he/she sends me an email.

I wanted to thank you guys for continuing to look into this for me. I am having a hard time getting any answers otherwise. I really do appreciate it!

Okay, just got the email response from the AF Reserve recruiter on degree requirements for AF reserve nursing:

"To be a nurse requires a BSN or ASN with a Bach in a medical related field."

Best of Luck!

Really, thank you so much!

I haven't been able to get a single response from AF Reserves, so I guess the recruiters don't even want to waste their time with my questions. The Navy Reserves contacted me though, only to tell me no, but call us back later!

I guess that means that it will just have to wait til I get my BSN.

Which is fine, I shouldn't be focusing so much on that right now. It can be on my to-do list for my 5yr goals.

I want to thank you again, you guys are so incredibly helpful - I would have gone crazy not knowing anything if it wasn't for you!

Hope you all have a great week!

OK, I just had to post again....My user name just changed everywhere!!! What is up with that???

I've been Nurse Nini for over 4 years, how can they change that? Why?

Maybe I'm going crazy...:sniff:
