Air Force NTP Boards July 2013

Hi all! Just turned in my packet and finished my telephone interview for the boards in July. A little about myself; I am going into my senior year of a BSN program and will graduate in May 2014. My current GPA is 3.49. I'm prior service Air Force(4 years). I have worked in the ER for the last 13 months as a Clinical Assistant(basic CNA stuff, but we can do phlebotomy, EKGs, and Bladder Scans). My references were two doctors(O-6(sel) in the Navy Reserve and a O-4 in the ANG) and a NP(Ret. O-4 Army reserve), I'm not really sure how much weight they will carry in the actual boards process.

For anyone that is wondering, the telephone interview followed the format that your recruiter should provide you with. It started out just by introducing yourself and since I was prior service my interviewer skipped over the part about informing me about the military since I have already been in. Then she just asked me questions about critical thinking, evidence based practice, and an ethical dilemma I have faced. The interview was pretty straight forward and not much at all like an interview. She went on to ask about my future goals and how I'd be a good fit for the Air Force. It pretty much followed the guideline that my recruiter gave me to a tee. Now I just have the long two month wait of seeing if I am selected or not!

Good luck to everyone else applying!

Medic.89 were you going the NTP route? I cant see how they were looking for prior experience if it is a program for nurses with less than 6 months of experience?

Congrats to those who were selected. I will be bugging my recruiter tomorrow, lol.

Specializes in Emergency Department.

Manda..where r you from? I haven't heard either!! Ugh!

Blackhawks, I am prior service and have received my license but I got my license after my package was sent to the board. It's just really hard to tell what they are looking for.

I applied OB both times. My recruiter is out of Seattle.

This is my first time applying. A prior enlisted with 1 year part time experience. It was devastating to hear that I was made an alternate. I just really wanted to get back in again. I guess, I was expecting too much and my package was not as strong enough to be selected :(

Second time applying. Last year was an alternate. Have had 6 months ER experience. Didn't get in or even an alternate this round. Military isn't in my cards. Good luck to those who are still waitin to hear; congrats to those who made it and keep trying to those who didn't.

I would like to get that 6 month full time experience and perhaps, we can re-apply on the FQ boards. You never know, we might get selected then. Good luck to all the alternates and non-selects. Congrats to all who got selected :)

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.

Don't be discouraged! Any branch of service is so crazy-competitive right now, so even making alternate is something. Did they tell you what number you were?

Don't give up!

I was told I am alternate #26. I am actually still optimistic. I was just really disappointed. I am glad that we have this forum. We are able to vent and get support from each other. Thank you!

Hbaum I am in California my recruiter told me two weeks about a week ago ". He is very good about contacting me and keeping in touch so I trust that as soon as he knows I'll know. That being said I'm probably going to check in with him today.

Yeah, it is hard to tell what exactly they are looking for since they don't give a reason as to why or why not you were selected. It feels as if they went more towards the way of taking people that have experience or will have their license relatively shortly. I mean in the past(5-6 years) it seemed like they took everyone that was qualified, but now with the cutbacks and people staying in longer they are taking people that they can call up right away. For someone that can apply and will graduate in May 2014 and get their license sometime that summer, it seems like it's almost impossible for them to get selected at this point. They are only taking 30ish people, so it felt like they selected people that could all attend COT before January and be ready to go. It just seems that having experience or your license is what they are looking for right now. So I'll apply again next year after I graduate and have my license and hope for the best.

Specializes in ICU, ED, PICC.

Hey all, just wanted to come on here and update you about my news.

I got accepted, but unfortunately, I had to turn down the offer. I hope it goes to one of you great nurses instead!!!

And I know that some of you are curious about the selection process, so I'll let you know what my application looked like.

3.6 GPA, graduated May 2011

Second time applying to NTP (last time I was an alternate)

I had 5 seriously awesome letters of reference from my current job, volunteer places, and previous instructor (compared to the 3 letters I had last year)

I've been working as a school nurse for the past year; and volunteering at free clinics and the American red cross for the past 2 years

Interview went good, apparently, haha. The interview at Travis AFB was really relaxed, I did an in-person interview compared to phone... more personal

And my 9 questions I redid and really focused on how my traits were great for the air force, how I want to give back to community and my country, and some other 'america-yeah!' stuff :)

I was supposed to be stationed in Keesler, which was my absolute last choice on my list.

Oh, and I didn't have any 'exceptions' or whatever that's supposed to be called.

Well, I hope I helped! Good luck next year for those who are reapplying, and to those on the waiting list I hope you hear good news throughout the year!
