2012 NCP Graduates, any news about ODS?

Hi everyone! Just curious if anyone has heard any news about when they are leaving for ODS and first duty station. For those that have recently graduated and gone to ODS, how long from graduation until you left for ODS? Just getting anxious and wanting ANY news!

I just found out I'm headed to Bethesda as well, and will likely be going to ODS when you do (passed the nclex a few years back), maybe i'll see you :)

Congrats on being selected, you know how hard is it now to be selected for commission to the Navy Nurse Corps. I assume you are an RN going for the RN-BSN bridge program, correct me if I am wrong. If you are on Class 12070 May 13-June15th, then I will be in your class. Good luck with everything, see you in Newport..

I'm in NCP, graduate May 2012, hoping to take NCLEX in June. I have an interview for a civilian position next week. If I don't leave for 6 months, I've got to work somewhere!! We don't have to "inform" them that we're working, do we? As long as we don't sign a contract we can do whatever we want I thought!

Deftonez188-When do you graduate? Are you going to ODS pretty quickly after your graduation? I have a feeling that summer ODS dates fill up rather quickly, so I don't know how big of chance I'll have to go in July...

I graduate this April - I don't have a date for ODS yet, however i'm hoping I won't have to wait 'months' to go. The conditions of being in the NCP, that you must be full-time in school, prevent working full-time, and maybe part-time (if you can even find a job these days as a new grad). NCP money ends when school does = no income thereafter :)

No you do not have to inform them, but they did recommend working as a PRN or temporary agency. I guess you can work as a PCA because they do not really need to train you on that one, unlike as an RN when you have to have orientation for a month or 2 in which they would not do knowing you will be leaving them anyway. Either way you have to let them know you are going to the military, whether you sign a contract or not, you are considered doing military service and they have to let you go for that. But the point is, you have to disclose to them that you will be leaving for the navy, it is just common etiquette. But yes, I believe there is no penalty for working per source of Mrs. Smith. Good luck with graduation on May 2012 and studying for the NCLEX. Study hard for it, I took Hurst review course as a peace of mind, just to make sure I pass on the first try. Ask me more if you have any questions..

No worries about informing them, I have already been working for the company. They know all about the NCP, they are just grateful to have me for any amount of time that they can. I just don't want to work if I'm going to be leaving 2 months after graduation...it looks like it's taking a little longer for everyone to get out of town and head to ODS! Just want to be productive during my wait! Looking forward to hopefully hearing soon where I'll be going. VentcSN & deftonez188 do either of you have children? I have San Diego as my first choice, Bethesda is my third, but kind of scared about moving there with my three kids! Thanks for all the info!

I have 2 kids (boys 6 and 11), and I will be stationed in Bethesda following the April 15 ODS. The thought of moving from a small, more rural area to a huge urban environment with kiddos has been a constant source of stress. Lots of investigating over the internet about school districts, apartments and commuting time, plus an onsite visit. I did find an apartment close to the hospital in an excellent district, but at the expense of the open outdoor environment my kids are used to. I had to develop faith that my boys will find adventure and excitement in this transition just as I am...but the first move is still definitely stressful.

Oh yeah, do what you gotta do to have some income, no hurt in doing that and I actually think it would be a smart way...If I already have a job like you I will just keep on working and it seems that you have an employer who is understanding. And no, I do not have any children and I am not married...San Diego was my first choice but I think they are not getting nurses for that station right now, but it might change in your case. I am getting Bethesda which was my second choice. I have respect on you joining the navy with 3 kids, I commend that. I can only imagine that it can be stressful, but I really think you will be fine because you will be an officer and many have done it who turned out just fine. And plus I think the military will really take good care of you due to the "bigger BAH" because you have dependents, free healthcare, and you will be in a stateside hospital working as nurse for 3 years....I also used to live in Northern Virginia, around the D.C. area...and trust me, it aint a bad place to live...

For those of you guys who have already been selected for NCP, how do you feel about the Navy accomodating your first three choices for where you would like to be stationed for the first tour?

No news yet. I graduated May 5th, I took NCLEX this last week and my license went active on Friday, so I'm hoping for information this week. They cannot release orders until you pass NCLEX, so I'll keep you posted on how my week goes! Anyone else hear any news?

I did direct accession and got my first pick of duty station. I also had orders at the beginning of the fiscal year which seems to make a difference as they run out of spots at more popular places. The nurse grad program at Portsmouth usually has 30 nurses in it this time of year and right now there are 3. Cutbacks.
