Orientation in LTC?

Specialties Geriatric

Published

Hello all....going to start in LTC part time...RN. some experience as LPN in LTC years ago...my question is how long is usual orientation??? Good place....5 star w/the new rating system... Thanks.

it depdends on the comfort level. usually new grads receive about 3 to 4 weeks of orientation, and nurses who have worked in ltc usually gets 4 to 7 days orientation. how comfortable are you working in ltc? you might want to let manager know that you havent worked in ltc for few years and you need little longer orientation.

We give as long as they need and ongoing support. It depends with every situation. Some nurses need only 2 days as they have lots of experience, some need 3 weeks and even then still need support.

If you finish orientation ( and try to make the most of it) and still have questions and feel insecure- sit down with your supervisor and offer to come in on your own time to learn. It may be a worthwhile investment if you like the place.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

In my area, a 3-day orientation is the norm whether you have LTC experience or not.
