Crazy med pass +

Specialties Geriatric

I am an evening charge nurse, brand new out of school. 40 Residents. 2 med passes, the first goes right into the second. The med pass alone lasts the entire shift. 16 diabetics, 2 sticks per shift. 35 treatments, 4 pressure ulcers. 6 Foleys. Last night I only had 3 aides who were disgruntled because of the shortage. How can I be in the dining room and pass meds? No med cart in the dining room rule. Have to keep a portable phone on my cart to answer calls. Sat down at 1115 to chart. Left at 1240. Im gonna burn out fast if this continues. Advice?

I was in the same situation in an LTC facility when I was fresh out of LPN school and the ink wasn't even dry on my license! I told the DON and ADON I wouldn't work in these conditions. It's not safe and I will not lose my license for either of you. They told me to go home. I got my stuff, clocked out and went home. They were calling me 2 days later wanting me to come back to work! But one of the nursing directors at the hospital had heard what I did and called me to come to work for her! So, you never know what can happen if you stand up for yourself and the license you worked so hard to get!!

Hey Nursevab I'm in the process of trying to get into MCCC lpn to ADN can you please email me I'd like some insight. [email protected]

Yes we have to be very careful and protect ourselves. Sometimes we are just a body in a facility to meet their state quota for nurses on staff. It is sad but true. I have worked at LTC facilities that give you up to 32 patients, this is ridiculous and expect you to get everything done in the state guidelines. I refuse to do this anymore.

Oh my New, so sorry for you, although long term is always crazy this takes the cake! I have 16 accu checks at 4 pm, BUT I dont have the med cart either, only what we call the licensed cart. We have a med aid. This sounds just plain unhuman! I would also see if your state has lawas on this, if it does report this! I hate to sound like it will be easy , but you must go! This is just not safe for your license or mental health, or resident safety.
