Hormonal fluctuations, cancer, any number of things.
The treatment is determined by the diagnosis which is made by the physician.

The Encyclopedia of Aging and The Elderly states that:
There are several factors that may cause lady partsl bleeding, including vaginitis, cervicitis , ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, and the use of drugs, such as digoxin, Coumadin, and estrogen.

Due to estrogen deprivation from advanced aging, elderly women experience lady partsl atrophy. The lady partsl epithelium becomes so thin and fragile that spontaneous bleeding occurs.
This is a very likely explanation, however, I would have a physician examine these patients to ensure that it isn't something more serious-like cancer.
