Best ASN nursing program near Atlanta

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

Hi everyone,

My family and I just recently moved to Georgia from Louisiana and I am unfamiliar with the area. I am looking to attend a community college to obtain an Associate's in Nursing and want to know what college would be the best to attend. I filled out an app for Georgia Perimeter College but read all kinds of horror stories about their program. I want to attend a school that has a good grad rate, NCLEX pass rate, and professors who actually want to see you succeed. Does anyone have any good recommendations of any good ASN programs around the Atlanta area? I live in Lithonia but don't mind a little commute.

Thanks!

I graduated from Gpc last year. It's not as bad as made out to be. It's affordable. And prepares you well for the Nclex and to be a nurse.

Thanks for the reply...the comments that I did read about GPC were from '07 lol, so maybe they have improved since then. I read that the teachers weren't really nice and made it harder for students to pass. I hope you don't mind me asking but did you pass the NCLEX the first time? And have you found a job? I also read that hospitals would rather hire someone with a BSN rather than ASN, how true is that? Sorry for all the questions, its just that I have no one else to ask.

In my humble opinion, I think Gwinnett Tech in Lawrenceville would be my first choice. It's not far from Lithonia and honestly, I've heard nothing but good things about the program. Regardless of the program though, I think you will find some type of negative feedback. Everyone has different learning styles and different expectations. I've heard some not so great things from some students in GPC's program this year, but if you're considering GPC, I say go for it. If a teacher isn't supportive or if the structure of the program isn't ideal, just keep in mind it's only a max of 2 years that you have to muddle through. GPC grads get hired and that's what counts.

For Nclex pass rates up to last year you should check out http://sos.ga.gov/PLB/acrobat/Forms/38%20Reference%20-%20Nursing%20Education%20Program%20Results%20(NCLEX).pdf

Thanks for the information Concrete Rose. I will look into Gwinnett Tech. Have you gone through one of the nursing programs?

There are good teachers and some not so good teachers at GPC. I passed the Nclex on my first attempt and I now work in a hospital.

Thanks again runsalot. Do you know which campus is the best and which is the worst. I am closest to the Decatur campus.

I am currently enrolled in GPC's nursing program and I really like it. There are definitely some professors that are better than others but I think they all want to see you succeed. There are a lot of good resources if you need extra help as well. I think the biggest complaint people that don't like it have is things are sometimes thrown on you at the last minute. You have to be flexible. I've found though that if you have a conflict and you actually talk to someone about it they are very accommodating...I would recommend it...and the program is only offered at the Clarkston campus. Let me know if you have any questions you want answered.
