This is my first week back to classes and finally a senior. Yay!

We weren't allowed to pick our classes or clinicals this year because of the computer issues. Ok, so now I have TWO things I hate.... I hate that they punish us for their issues they can't fix, but I digress.

My normal clinical day is today from 0645-1330. Easy enough and I can still pick my dd up from the bus stop.

They told us yesterday in class that we will be meeting today (Tuesday) as our clinical orientation, etc but we will be here until 3:30. That means I need to find someone to pick my child up from the bus or school today.

My ex, who is normally very flexible, has to go to court today (that's part of his job) and can't pick her up.

When I try to talk to the instructor about this she was basically telling me I may need to drop the class if I have a child care issue.

Um, hello! You didn't even tell us until the day before that we were going to be here that late. Unfortunately, a lot of us are moms and just 'assumed' we would not be here that much past our normal clinical time. They just have zero sympathy for this stuff nor are they being even the slightest bit flexible. For some other moms, they are off on Tuesdays so just planned accordingly and then they had to scramble to find a sitter.

Yeah, I know there are 50 other students that would love to have my spot here but dang it, I'm a really good student and their lack of communication to us when we have emails, a program website and class communication access. Why couldn't they post that last week when they posted the syllabus and stuff so I could PLAN my day?

It just drives me crazy!! I'm not asking any teacher to make special arrangements for ME nor is anyone else. Just TELL me what I need to know in time to get it handled and all will be fine!

Ok, vent over. I feel better now, thanks.

I understand where you are coming from.Alot of us are mothers and have lifes outside of class. So yes she shoul've told you in advance so you can have someone get your kid off the bus.Hopefully the communication is better next time

I'm only starting my nursing program in Sept but I can already tell that my Spring semester will be issues. It has to do with what others mentioned with clinical times. Our OB clinical is only listed to be from 8-12. Now I find that VERY strange because the only clinical that is that short for us is psych. All the others are from 8-2. So when I do my schedule for Spring, I will do it in mind that the clinical will PROBABLY be from 8-2 but I know a lot of other students won't really notice it or question it and will more likely be in for a surprise when orientation rolls around. Even when you know its suspicious, you still go with the "well the school would list it if its suppose to be longer" mentality. Now I could be wrong of course but I think I'll just go with my gut on this one. I've also heard of my school having issues with the hospitals they choose for clinicals and sometimes you're not even on the appropriate floors for the clinicals you're suppose to be there for (ie: being on the adult neuro floor when you're doing your peds clinicals).

What I dislike abou nursing school right now (before even starting) is they are misleading us on how much everything costs! When we first registered for our 1st level nursing courses, they gave us information on the cost of the assessment kit, CPR, background and drug test. They have yet to give us information about the I KNOW we're gonna need, where to get and how much our scrubs will be (all we know is that they are all white). I'm sure they will wait until orientation to spring all of this on us and even though orientation is a week before classes, I would have liked to know about the cost of these things from the beginning with the rest so I could plan out when I was going to buy all this stuff!

All this aside, I'm still very excited about starting and going through this and being a nurse. I do not hate my school, I just don't like how disorganized they seem to be with certain things. I don't know the professors so I can't comment on them yet.

My profs are mostly well prepeared and post things in advance. However, class starts in a matter of days and one failed to post the textbook on the bookstore web site as of 2 weeks ago. I emailed and asked nicely if it could be posted. A couple days later, a book was posted, and I ordered it immediately from Amazon. Now the same prof posted a note on the blackboard site that states, "The textbook is XYZ, please see the bookstore." This is NOT the same text and the bookstore is stocking the OTHER one. What the heck? I emailed the prof, but of course no response. I suspect the first class is gonna be interesting! I understand life is tough and nursing school is also, but a little cooperation would be nice.

What I really, really, really hate is all the talking that is going on during class. We have not had this problem so much in the past semesters, but I swear I am going to lose my mind if it doesn't stop. The teacher stopped class at least 10 times today. Ridiculous. Go figure that the ones talking get annoyed at people shushing them.

We had a good bit of that going on last semester. Our classrooms were built in like 1974 so not very modern. They are basically long, narrow rooms and you can pretty much hear every conversations 3-4 rows behind you.

Last year, these 4 guys would sit together and chatter the entire length of class in our most difficult class. Everyone was turning around and giving them the stink eye and asking them nicely to please hold it down. They weren't just chatting but giggling like 8 year old girls! I finally got sick of 'em and just turned around and said, "can y'all just shut up for a bit?" Of course THEY get mad at ME! WTH?

If what you are saying to each other is THAT interesting or important, take it outside!

I can totally appreciate comments w/ the student beside you asking for clarification or whatever but carrying on an entire conversation during class baffles me.

Of course, these are the students that complain about getting a C in a class. Can't imagine why. :uhoh3:

I also really hate the last minute scheduling stuff. But, at my school, although we do have issues between people with kids/jobs and those without, mostly it's tension between transportation issues. My school is in one city (we'll call it city "A") and about half the nursing students live in A. However, the other half live in city "B" which is about a 45 minute drive on a good day. Now, our clinicals can be in either city A or city B. Now you'd think that people who live in B will take clinicals in B, right? Wrong. The B people always take all the A clinicals (since it's a crazy first come first served kind of thing) and leave the A people with the 6am clinical in city B. I think that's super lame, being an A person. And then when I want to switch, all I hear is, "Well, you don't have kids or a job, so you should be more flexible than me." and then list why they can't switch either. I hate always being the one that gives in and then wakes up at 4am once a week when I have class till 9pm the night before!

Grr. Vent over! Do any of you guys have problems like this at all?

The only complaint I have so far is the lack of communication... registeration for this semster was messed up due to a major communication "lack there of" by the nursing department.

Postings of clinical hours and locations haven't been released, and yea, I am a mommy that needs to get my lil girl to daycare at a ridiuclus time in the morning for clinical, but I have enjoyed clinical for the most part.

So I guess its worth it. I tend to have have to drive about 30-40 mintues to the hospital site, which means I get up at 5am for a 6:35 shift.

The worst was at the end of last term I had a disagreement over my grade ( I got 74.67 percent and my instructor refused to round up).We are taking a B- to a B. B's start at 75%. We set up a meeting and I had to bring my 4 year old daughter. Well we sat out side of her office for over 2 hours waiting. I finally gave up went to the coordinator, who basically smiled and said oh there must have been a misunderstand, and its the instructors choose to round up or not.

I am still burning over that! That class is still my worst grade so far in the program...

Good times.

I might only be in my second year, but to me its the constant lack of respect in communication that needs to be fixed.
