whether to italicize internet sources?

because I have received several different instructions - not sure how to correctly type internet sources that I want to include in a reference list

- it's the title - sometimes it is italicized and sometimes it isn't

(my school's guidelines, and APA have a bunch of examples, like underline the title of a book and put quotation marks around title of an article - I thought that italicizing replaced underlining)

- this is not a book title though, it's for one of those pages that appears on the internet with no real author.

other examples show these titles are not italicized

one librarian said to italicize titles

I know how to do the author, date, title, retrieved Feb. 21, 2006, from the

World Wide Web: http etc.

how do I type the title?

Does anybody know?

thanks

It depends on the type of internet information --of course! Nothing is ever straight forward!

For an article in an internet periodical:

Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Date of publication). Title of article. Title of journal, volume number(issue number if available). Retrieved month day, year, from http://Web address.

For a nonperiodical internet document (e.g., a Web page or report)

Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Date of publication). Title of article. Retrieved month date, year, from http://Web address.

NOTE: When an Internet document is more than one Web page, provide a URL that links to the home page or entry page for the document. Also, if there isn't a date available for the document use (n.d.) for no date.

When using a part of nonperiodical internet document

Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Date of publication). Title of article. In Title of book or larger document (chapter or section number). Retrieved from http://Web address.

This information is from the Purdue University writing labs on-line APA page. It's a great site for APA help.

I use Reference Point Software, it formats all your papers in perfect APA format. Integrates seamlessly with all the MS Words from the oldest to 2003 (Mac version as well) and Word Perfect. I don't work for the company, but I am a fan of the software. APA is so confusing to me! They also have a MLA template. http://www.referencepointsoftware.com

If you need COS format: http://www.styleease.com/APAMain.htm and not to be biased: http://www.apastyle.net. I can only attest to the quality and ease of use of referencepoint, though.

chose the reference you wanting to cite (or as close to what you are wanting to cite) at the left side of the page. another page comes up where you input information about the reference. after you have completed that, you click on a button and the machine generates two citations for you. one in mla format, the other in apa format. you merely cut and paste the one you want onto your paper. i found this site two years ago when i was working on a paper and showed it to my professor. she now includes it in her syllabus and recommends it to everyone. it is a real timesaver when it comes to setting up these references. try it! you'll see!

the most confusing are the electronic resources. all you can do is collect as much information about each electronic resource as you can and go from there. this web site will tell you if you need to italicize or not.

I would actually ask the teacher for whatever class you're doing this for... Some teachers use different formats...
