Hi Everyone,

I am starting clinicals in the Fall and I just accepted a position in the ER!!

I will be working part-time evenings while in school as a Business Associate (Unit Secretary), what should I expect?

I am pretty excited about the position, it will definitely give me some experience with sick patients, traumas, blood, guts, vomit! :)

I am hoping I have the stomach to deal with it. I figure it's a good introduction, I will be dealing the admissions, entering orders, bed control, answering phones, getting insurance info, etc. I will be learning a lot!!

Anyone working in the ER during school?

This is exactly what I do. Here we call it an ER admitting clerk. I register patients and insurance info., put in orders, arrange for flight transfers and ambulance transfers, post charges, make calls to other hosptials and doctors, etc., etc., etc. We have some days where it is just chaos. But I have found that is when it seems to run the smoothest. Everyone knows there job and gets it done. The administration here is big on two things accuracy and HIPPA. I do manage to get some studying done when we are slow. I love the people I work with and the patients. You will come to meet all types. I have learned so much from the professionals that I work with, and know that it will only benefit me in the long run. My supervisor is great about my schedule. Well, I don't really know what else to say. It is a lot of learning though. I was lucky enough to have my training over the summer as well. This helps a lot because there is so much info.

I worked in the trauma unit of an ER a few years ago. I loved it. That is where I first caught the nursing bug. I had just graduated from college with a BS in Health Education adn Sociology. It was the midddle of the school year so I was waiting to get a teaching job in the fall. I took the job _because I liked the hours (7-7) and I was always interested in the health field. I had a great time and learned so many things. The nurses wwere great, as were most of the doctors. We had one doctor that just loved teaching. He would call me into a room to show me interesting things all the time. I saw all kinds of things that I wouldnt have thought that I would have the stomach fot\r (gunshot and stab wounds, gangreen etc) It was a great experience. There was seldom a dull moment. My duties were generally the same as the last poster's duties. I learned medical terminology really quick! I'm sure you will have a blast! Good Luck!

I am an ED registrar and register pts when they first come in. Our Unit secretaries actual do more in the ED itself, calling for tests and taking phone calls etc. I guess it depends on the hospital!

Thank you for your replies, I have been on vacation so I wasn't able to reply, nothing like a nice cruise before starting nursing school and a new position in the ED!!! I can't wait, I am truly refreshed and can't wait to get started and challenged by the things that wait for me in the near future!!

woowhoo!!

On my way to my goals and dreams!!
