What kind of Stethoscope?

Fellow nursing students- what kind of stethoscope do you use/have you used? I have heard wonderful reviews about Littman's but our clinical instructor suggested starting off with a cheaper one first (and buying a nicer, specialized one after graduation/once you start working on a specific unit). I don't know what kind would be too cheap, but I also don't want to pay a fortune.

I'm looking at ADC, Prestige, and Mabis...but would love any/all suggestions!

Thanks everyone!

I used a Littman Classic II in school, only because my in laws bought it for me for Christmas. If I had to buy one it would have been one much cheaper that i could afford. I will say, I liked my littman! It seems to have walked away though :(

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

Littmans are worth the expense. They're more comfortable to wear, and you can hear better through them.

I have a Littman Classic II. I had the prestige they sell at my school, but I will never go back. I love my Littman, I bought my boyfriend (tele nurse) the cardiology III...so hard to give it to him after I tried it ;) definitely what I'm getting when I graduate. For school, Littman Classic II is great, though.

Specializes in OR.

I suggest you go to a scrub shop and try them out! When I was preparing to start my program, I stopped in to a local scrub shop and they let me try a couple different stethoscopes. Not only was I able to choose the one that worked best for me, but I also got a lesson in stethoscopes, since I had never used one before that. I recommend anybody who is unsure about stethoscopes to go and give them all a try first.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Cardiology..

Better yet go to a college

Buy the Littman $$65-$85 that is used for both pediatrics and adults.
