What can a nursing student do if they fail a program?

Hello all, I would really love to know what a nursing student can do if they fail out of a nursing program in third semester. Are there schools that accept former nursing students? And their credits or will the individual have to start all over again.

If they have failed out completely from the school, and they are third semester, I would recommend them taking the NCLEX-PN, and then re-apply at another schoolas a transition LPN student. Unless they are an LPN, that (usually) can not re-enter where they left off at another school. If they cannot apply for LPN, then they might have to start over.

In my program, we are allowed to fail a class once. So we can fail and just take that semester over again. Then if we fail again, we're thrown from the program. But if we got our LPN, (which we can get after 2nd semester) then we can re-enter at 3rd semester and try again. It's another good reason for people to get their LPN while in school!

my school allows the student to reapply but they go on a waiting list---basically waiting for the spots next semester that open when someone else fails. :o Also, there are a few four-year schools that take the students who don't pass our program.

Where I go, you have to complete and pass the third semester in order to sit for the LPN exam, so that's not an option here.

What do you feel like you want to do? If you still want to try to stay in nursing you can try to get into another nursing program. You will most likely need to convince the administrators of the nursing school why you will do better at their school. The second reply you got here is also a feasibility--see if you qualify with the training you already have to take the test to become licensed as an LPN in your state.

If you don't think you want to continue on with nursing, there are other healthcare fields. There are a number of healthcare fields that require many of the same science pre-reqs but don't require you to take a state licensing exam. There are other licensed healthcare professions as well. Do some research on this. You might find something that appeals to you.

I know some schools allowed students to test out for the nursing classes they have already completed (challenge exam). The person can look into excelsior, I am not sure what the requirements might be. Lastly, test for the Lpn exam. Good luck to you.
