Weighing LVN vs. RN

Happy New Year Guys.

I"m applying to TJC near Dallas to the LVN and RN --ADN program.

IN the fall if I"m accepted only to LVN , should I go that route thru the 'back' door?

It would give me exposure at a slower pace perhaps and then I could work as an LVN for one summer then go straight into the RN program....

However, I"m 34 and a teacher told me that with a college degree already (but only retail experience) I should simply pursue RN....It provides the paradigms I need to learn.

any thoughts?

Thx.

Pilar

Usually more education opens more doors to new opportunities. It also depends what you want to do with your career and if you want to advance into administrative and such positions. When it comes down to pay it is usually exactly same for ADN and BSN, although some agencies, gov. positions and others may require you to have BSN. LVN have also some limitations in practice, therefore in pay as well. Think about what you want to do with your degree/career

good luck

Hi Pilar. Congratulations on deciding to go to nursing school. As for deciding which program to choose, you probably have a quicker chance of getting into the LVN program before the ADN. (that's if the waiting list is as long as it is here in Austin) I personally think the ADN route is a better choice simply because you will make more money and have more options of where you would like to work when you graduate BUT going to the LVN route isn't a bad choice either. I am in an LVN program right now, I really wanted to get into the ADN program but the waiting list is so long, but the LVN to ADN mobility program doesn't have a waiting list(I will be doing that next) . Should you decide to go the LVN route it won't be a bad choice because you can start working as an LVN getting experience, making some money and most likely wherever you work at, they probably have some financial assistance to help you pay for you to go back and get your RN degree. Good luck on whatever you decide to choose.

I agree with Nicole. I am starting my LPN program on the 26th. I plan on going through to my RN as well. For me it's not the waiting list, it's the cost. The only school in town that offers a an ASN or BSN costs $30 grand a year. I plan on getting my ASN through Excelsior (once I am done with my LPN).
