  1. Pilar posted a topic in Texas Nursing
Hi guys, it's been awhile since I've written, this is off the beaten path but I'm not going into nursing. I had a major change of heart when I did just 2 hrs. of volunteer work in Tyler at a hospital. Hence, I will remain in retail until I find my next career. Could someone pleeeeeez write back re: what Houston is like. I've been only about 15 times , and despite the insane traffic , it does offer alot--things to do and cultural diversity. but what about the career market? i.d. the Energy industry laid off thousands. any feedback would be appreciated. Pilar, Tyler, Tx.
  2. Hi guys. I'm in Tx. preparing for nursing school and look forward to the day I can travel and expereince other places in the US. I have an affinity for NM....Santa Fe and Alb. What is it like over there? How are the hospitals and nurses? Tucson is also an awesome place. Anyway, just wanted a little feedback. THX Pilar
  3. Hi guys , I'm 34 and thinking of just pursuing the LVN program first and work for one yr. and then RN..(i would like to get some experience first before being thrown to the wolves so to speak) I like to take life in baby steps..... are there hospitals in Dallas that will help you with tuition if you agree to work for them for some time period?? How does that work? thx for the feedback.
  4. Renerian, thx for your response. Quick questions--why is food science so difficult? I do NOT have a propensity for math and chemistry (quantitative and reasoning) so perhaps nursing will be better for me... lastly, can one purse a master's in nutrition only with an undergrad. in nutrition as well? Thx again. Pilar
  5. Good evening guys. I've moved to a city that offers one of the best nursing programs in the state & now I'm getting the jitters re: careers. (perhaps the volunteer work in telemetry will help) I love nutrition and am a health nut and they are many things I'm oppossed to in nursing; however, if I pursue psychiatric nursing I wont' have to deal with all the shots and catheters etc. I just don't know. My passion is health food and educating others on the dangers of sugar, fat, carcinogens, etc. However, would not a B.S. in Nutrition limit me? Can't I teach nutrition to patients in a professional indirect way? Plz respond . Thx kindly!!
  6. Happy Thursday. I have some questions for ya'll. I'm not attending nursing school for another 12 mo. , doing my pre-reqs. However, I look over the Nclex study guide to get a feel for what 's ahead. Do yall have any suggestions during off times as to what I can start studying?? (abbreviations, meds, etc) Also,I've never even worked near a hospital! Wouldn't volunteer work be good? (like at a clinic or home health, something?) I did it for one mo. in med surg, but it was such a mess cus the nurses did not want me on the floor taking vitals with the CNA at all. It was a very strange unpleasant experience, but at least I know how to do vitals. Final question: I certainly hope all hospitals use the automatic sphygmo. because the manual one is so hard to distinguish the difference between systolic and diastolic, but I"m sure we'll get lots of practice correct? thx so much. Pilar
  7. Hello down under, I'm a pre-nursing student and dream of working in the UK or Australia one day. What is the standard of living like? I realize every other country values life, leisure and family UNLIKE America. For this is why I desperately want to leave this place once I gain some experience in the US. What are nurses paid in Australia, not that it matters , since I 'm interested in lifestyle, not making a ton of $$. Any feedback would be appreciated. I have so much respect for Australia, and the European countries and their beauty!!! Pilar
  8. Hi Sue, what field of nursing are you in? What is Wales like? I have a sister in Manchester earning her MBA and I can't wait to visit. Plz describe the culture as well as your nursing experience. Thank you kindly! Pilar
  9. Hi , I"m looking for an epal with whom to correspond in the UK or Ireland. Any feedback would be appreciated!! Pilar
  10. Eventually, when I earn my nursing degree in several yrs., I would love to work in Europe...on a contract basis. Does anyone have any feedback please? Can you discuss the difference between both countries healthcare syst??? Does Europe have private AND socialized medicine? I realize they pay half of what Americans do , but $$ is NOT my priority. I have family in Dingle Ireland and in Manchester UK and my heart longs to be in Europe at times. Hence I just have so much more respect for Europe's culture, values, beliefs , and lifestyle. To say the least. Plz write if you can, thank you. Ciao
