Utica, Ramussen, or Keiser???

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

I live in Tampa, Fl. I got bachelors in computer science and I'm bored out of my mind and the pay is horrible. So I figure with nursing it would be exciting to help people and I would make some decent coin

So those are my 3 options to do the accelerated BSN since I already have a bachelors.

I have a 3.1 but I really don't think thats good enough for any of the public schools in Florida, plus they have long wait list.

Utica, I already got in, all you have to do is take 1 pre-req through them and your automatically enrolled. But its completely online and the reviews I read are 90% bad,,

Ramussen, Don't know much about it but they let you take pre-reqs after getting accepted so thats cool.

For the first two I wouldn't have to move.

But for Keiser in Sarasota, I probably would have to... That does seem like the best school to go to..

I would love any suggestions from people who have gone to any of these schools or ever were looking into them before.

And, also the price for these schools is all around 50k right?

Thanks!

Anyone have any useful info? I have interviews coming up!

Thanks

OP:

Welcome to the "buyer beware" school of hard knocks and harder won advice.

Congratulations on getting a batchelor's degree in computer science. Now unless within that degree there are the prerecquisite courses required for a nursing degree as the rabbi says, they mean"bupkis" to you now. They prove you can do the readin', writin' and rithmitic but that's about it.

So what to do. Go to (collegescorecard.ed.gov). There you will find things like a school's graduation and retention rates and how much (too much) these schools cost.

As far as Rasmuussen and *Keiser are concerned, they are loan mills with low graduation and retention rates as well as being expensive. They will require an "arbitration agreement" as a condition of enrollment; and as a for-profit () they will loan you up because that's what they do. Up tp 80-90+% of the students are loaned up. So what do you think their real business may be?

Now for choice three. Utica College in Utica, N.Y.? as you will discover, their graduation rate is at 45% which is the national average. I believe G/R rates are the best indicators of general scholastic success because they tell you whether a school is in it for you as a student or the Benjamins.

So when you say you've heard ~90% bad reviews about Utica realize this is an online program and people who wish to become BSNs without prior nursing backround most often they don't do well. Why?

Nursing is not art appreciation. There are actual hands-on rites of passage you have to go through, not virtually, but in reality, that you have to know. Nursing nomenclature being just one of them.

So if these are your three absolute choices, you have sort of backed yourself in a corner. I would get rid of the come one, come all suck-up for-profit and quasi for-profit and choose Utica College; but go to groundschool if possible. That's the key with all schools for non-nurses.

One more thing. Why are you in a rush and why must you have a BSN? What about an AD?

Here's an idea: Keep working at your present job, take the money and instead of heading gangbusters into some "nursing or nothing" program, take the prerecquisites one at a time at the local CC, pay your own way through, give yourself some time to reevaluate schools and ultimately save yourself a ton of money.

*Word to the wise:

If any school is so proud of the education they provide, they would not have you sign away your rights (arbitration agreement). 97% of the for-profits reqiure this get out of jail free card including Rasmussen, *Keiser (not a for-profit but they function like one) and the legendary South University and University of Phoenix are such schools.

Go ahead look them up too. The net is replete with factual stories of lawsuites, and angry students who live in debt peonage with no one to turn to and few who care.

Did you end up choosing Utica in St. Petes? I'm considering this school. Just worried about the reviews.

I am curious about their reputation too! I am considering it for this coming Fall term (2017)

I spoke at length with an admissions rep. The program seems legit. I really like the idea of the prereqs being online and that the school is located near me. Also, should you not want to attend the program or do not get in, a lot of admissions reps from other schools said their prerequs are transferable.

Pls how did you like the program
