Totally OT but I can't belive my public school!!

My oldest dd is 5 years old and today we went to enroll her in Kindergarden. I was very excited and so was she. Well I do not live in a really nice neightborhood and so we dont have a very good public elementary school. But I though how bad can kindergarden be?

Well while enrolling some of her other classmates where there and lets see what all happened in a 15 min period:

-they stabbed her 5 times with a paper clip they had undone to make it long. She has red swollen bumps all over her arms because of it.

-pushed her down

-called her an "a**hole" and were laughing at her (she was the only white person there so I guess it was reverse discrimination is how I felt). I have never in my life treated someone who was a different color any different, and I expect the same.

The mother of these children did nothing so I had to yell at them to stop harrasing my dd, who is the sweetest child and was trying to play with these kids. Then I told the teachers and the enrollment lady what was going on and they looked over and saw them holding the paper clip and going after another child and just went "Ohhh, hmmm" and did NOTHING at ALL!

Needless to say I walked right out and my child will just not go to school. There is no place else for me to put her, the private school are $300 a month (which I can not afford at all right now) and no one around here is accepting transfer students in the district or out of the district.

I am not one to easily freak out but how am I supposed to drop my child off with these people to "learn" when I can't even feel safe where she is.

I remember kindergarden being a lot of fun. I can't belive what I saw today.

Oh Marilyn, I know that must have just broken your heart! I'm so sorry! I have very strong anti-public school beliefs, but they're based on many reasons and I'll keep that to myself for fear of offending someone. Needless to say, if anyone is curious and/or open-minded and would like to hear about it (some of it is religion-based), feel free to PM me.

I have a new kindergartener this year - we're really, REALLY blessed to have a fantastic private school here, even though it's a very small, rural town.

Most of the private schools around here offer some forms of tuition assistance grants and work scholarships.. have you checked with the schools in your area, they might have something like that available.. or if worse comes to worse, explain your situation, maybe they'd work something out with you?

I totally feel for you! My DH and I lived in the town where we were raised and went through school K-12. Over the years, our top notch school district went WAY down hill! By the time we were done, it was bad. Then we had our two children and were facing the difficult decision of how to school them. I was staying home, so private school was financially out of the question. I was fully prepared to home school them, and actually started "teaching them" when they were 3. We decided it was in the best interest for our family to move. We bought a house almost an hour away from our "hometown". We have a small school district, in a small town now. My son started Kindergarten this week, in fact, and we are all very pleased with the school and teacher. In fact, I have talked to his teacher on he phone 3 times this week. If they have ANY question, they call. I like that they are willing to take time to call me to get the information to make this the best experience possible for him. He LOVES IT! He is also way ahead of the other students in his class, because we have always worked with him at home. He can read, and is working on multiplication tables. The class is learning to spell their names! I'm hoping he doesn't get into trouble out of boredom.

Good Luck!

I taught Pre-K at one point. We had a 4 year old child bring a box cutter to school and threaten another child with it. (He dis not pull it out - he just told him it was in his bookbag - it was) The mom said she must have "accidently" stuck it in there the night before after she was opening boxes at his grandma's house...whatever. Some kids today scare me...but the lack of attentiveness and maturity of some parents scares me even more!

Thank you all so much for your advice, encouragement and good thoughts. You have no idea what that means to me!!

Since I walked out the other day I have gotten nothing but support from friends and family. It is truly amazing and makes me feel good.

Thanks again,

Marilyn

Check out the HSLDA website. It is the HomeSchool Legal Defense Association website. They offer lots of links and legal info by state. A good magazine to read is called "the Teaching Home".
