Study tips

Hello,

I am in my first semester of Med Surg and would appreciate any study tips someone may have and how to organize so much information that will make it easier to study.

What kind of learner are you?

Audio Visual Kinesthetic? A little of each?

Personally I could read a book 1,000 times and still not remember a thing.

So here's how I do things...

I don't read the books because my brain gets overloaded with info and I'll think too much during tests. When I actually open my textbook I go straight to the tables and charts because they compact all the info that I need into the simplest of terms. I use my teachers handouts/power points since that is really what they want you to know. And my favorite is doing practice questions! Your textbook should come with an online resource that has some questions. If I'm having trouble with a certain subject I'll look up "______ practice nursing NCLEX questions" and do them all.

That's what I do I don't know if it will work for you, just some tips :)

My favorite thing to do was to go on youtube and look up nursing student videos. I got so many great ideas there. Of course you'll come up with your own study methods, but here are some things that help me:

- Organize your binders. Make sure you know each class's schedule of assignments, including reading, exams, and things that are due. I combine all of these into one table that has a row for each week so that I can see at a glance what I have coming up.

- Read or skim assigned chapters before class. Carefully read any powerpoints or study notes before class.

- After class, re-read and organize notes you took in class. Do this daily if you can. Exposing yourself to the material several times really helps.

- Review course objectives and study the information from your textbooks and notes that relate to the objectives.

- Do NCLEX, textbook and ATI questions that relate to the subject you're studying.
