Students not working while going to school....

Nursing Students General Students

So I have decided not to work while I go through the BSN program. I would like to hear from others who have or are doing the same thing. How are you getting through financially? Loans, parents, or other? I am a non-trad student that will most likely be taking out a few loans here and there to get me through, but I feel this is necessary to keep up with my course work. How about you?

Glad that I got a 20k scholarship from my university, it's a BSN program, and plus the GI Bill is what I'll be living off of and my Veterans Disability. It's a private school so the financial aid package was really great I don't have to take out any private loans just the regular stafford with my scholarship and private school grant. In the summer time I'll bartend and save up my tips as much as I can for incidental stuff throughout the school year. But next semester I'll be on a different GI Bill that pays your tuition and fees plus pays books and housing (a lot more than my apartment actually costs). So I'm actually an exception then most people as I'll be making money going to school. So I better study and pass with flying colors as this really is like a job for me going back to school. I know this sounds ridiculous but my goal is to aim for a 4.0 GPA while in nursing school only because I don't have the other stressors to impact my life like most people. Not married, no kids, no job, so nursing school will be my job.

I take out the max amount allowed each year for the federal student loan I get (which this year is $10,500, my tuition is around $3,000). The first year of the program I also took out (and it kills me to say this) a $20,000 loan with Sallie Mae. We paid off all of our debt except our mortgage and eliminated our car payment. The credit card balance has slowly started to build from minor purchases made during the weeks we are short funds but its a small price to pay for having a little bit of time with my family while I am in school.

i don't start until january but i have been saving and plan on living off of that while in school and working during the summer. i also have a 401k that i can take out of for last ditch emergency...... but that is only last choice. loans... i have enough from my first degree. I'm also going to try for a Job One grant.
