Starting clinicals

Nursing Students General Students

I am starting clinicals once our class returns from spring break. My question is for all of the students who have already started clinicals. What was the one item ( other than caffeine) that was a lifesaver while in clinicals? The one item that you wished you could pass along to others, so that their clinical experience will be exceptional.

I always like to take my drug book, and any clinical book that has diagnosis in it, so you can look up anything you don't know about. It gives great information, that the nurses or your instructors may not have time to tell you about, or don't know. And they main thing to take with you is a willingness to learn! Always be searching for knowledge. Once a nurse stopps worrying about being a good nurse, they aren't one! Good Luck!

On my first clinical I knew nothing - nada - zippo, but I'm learning. The absolute best thing to have with you in the clinical setting are the names of anyone else in your group who is already working in health care. Try to buddy up with him/her if you can. Otherwise, find out where that person is in relation to where you are on the floor, and ask him/her to drop by 10-15 minutes after you start and to check up on you when ever they have a minute. Anyone who is already working in health care already knows everything they'll be doing on the first clinical.

You should have seen my eyes pop out of my head when my female fellow student came in to help me and whipped back the ol' guys ...ummm...well, that's a story for another day.....

Anyways, that's my advice...
