Retaking a course?

Has anyone here ever had to retake a course?

Though I'm not sure yet if that's what is going to happen there is the possibility I'll have to retake Med-Surg. I haven't tallied the points from the exams with the points we get for paperwork assignments so I still don't know yet. I'm just asking out of curiosity. If you did, how did it make you feel? How should I feel if I have to?

I've never had to retake a course, but don't get too down on yourself. Med/Surg is HARD!! Especially when the grading scales are so strict. I'm sure you wouldn't be the only one to have to retake it within your program. But atleast the second time around you would be more familiar with the material. Who knows, you might end up knowing the material better than someone who only took it once since you are being retaught.

Good luck!

I've retaken a course to improve my grade from a C to an A. It was not in the nursing program however, so it did not impede my progress. Look at it in the context that you will be better off the second time, because you are familiar with the material already. It will make you a better nurse, because you will have solid grounding in that area. Med-surg is the hardest nursing course I've had to take and there were many times when I thought I wasn't going to pass. Hang in there.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I feel deep inside that I'm okay with having to retake the course if I have to. I've had several instructors and seasoned nurses tell me that they also had to retake the course when they were in school or simply told me to hang in there, reminding me that things worth having or worth fighting for. I think my biggest concern is....How much more can I put my family through? I mean, I haven't been working since mid-semester after learning that I was sabotaging myself. I was working every weekend and was not able to use that valuable time to study so I began failing. Once I quit working my grades improved.....However, apparently too late. I've been unable to get high enough scores to get me to the average that I would need to be. Our passing grade is an 80. My average now, not counting the points we get for our dosage/calc exam or our other projects, is a 76. Yes, I went through a period of feeling stupid....inadequate....You name it.

And yes, it finally occurred to me that that line of thinking was a waste of time and brain space so I am doing my best to cut it loose. Trying to maintain a positive attitude here and what you both have said helps immensely in reminding me. Thank you.

Oh,yeah...I've had to take courses over again. Sometimes, it just happens. I personally wouldn't worry too much about it...and look on the bright side...you now know what the course consists of. Besides, if you really want to be a nurse, what's done is done...and you do whatever you have to do to make it happen. I was college faculty for about a year...there were students that had to take courses over...they didn't seem to be too scarred by it. Again, just do what you have to do. I pretty much consider myself not the best student...but I'm a good nurse. Hang in there.

Your passing grade is an 80%?!? OUCH!! Our passing grade is a 75% and I thought that was bad. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people had to retake the class.

Renee, I appreciate this. Thank you.

You'd be surprised how many people have asked the same thing, with the same astonishment. My cousin even remarked that her passing grade when she was in nursing school was a 75; couldn't believe ours. However, what to do, eh? And no, I'm not the only one. There are a couple of others who are struggling (if not more and maybe I don't know about it?) and all we can do is work to hold each other's morale up.
