I dont want to provide any details of the situation. fear that fellow classmate(s) who may read this forum will be able to identify who I am. but I am being harassed by a fellow nursing student. I want to report but fear that it may interfere with my spot in the program. this person makes me very uncomfortable and is crazy. harasses me only on campus. what should I do? if i report can it backfire? what if the dean doesn't see it as harassment or the person persuades the dean that i'm overreacting. help..

Report it. You should not have to feel scared or uncomfortable in a safe place. Do others see this? If so then you have witnesses. If nothing gets done go higher and higher until something is done. No one has the right to feel uncomfortable from a student or faculty member, ever.

people are not aware that i am being harassed. from the outside it looks like a friendly exchange

You still need to report him/her. Where will it stop if you don't stop it?

you are right. but i fear it may backfire. and unfortunately, this person who is harassing me comes across as mentally unstable. the student is harassing me over something very tedious...i can only imagine what this person will do if i report and he/she gets kicked out program.

Is there an instructor there you can confide in? maybe get some insight? You need to get help somehow. If they did get kicked out for whatever reason then you take legal action if the harassment continues. This is how bullies get away with things. They scare the people enough about the what if's.

are you sure it's harassment, can you give some examples?

no i dont want someone to be able to identify me. but i am positive i am being harassed

Have you told the person that what they are doing is unacceptable? I would think that would be your first step and then if things continue to go to an instructor or someone within the program to file a complaint. You should not feel uncomfortable or unsafe!

I am with donk. As a person with a dry sense of humor myself, I have come across as pretty mean in the past. Perhaps the person doesn't realize their behavior is harassing?

yes, I've made it very clear to the harasser that what they are doing is unacceptable. but the person continues anyway.

Then I think the first step is to talk to an advisor outside of your program. Perhaps someone in academic advising. They can point you in the right direction of who can handle it next. I would not tolerate the harassment.
