Hello everyone,

I have heard several people talk about getting their LPN while in high school. Is this true? Where are these programs? Is it something that depends on the state? The school?

My daughter is talking about taking pre-reqs from community college while in high school but if there is a high school program, that might be better for her.

Any thoughts?

I remember a poster several months ago talking about her daughter being accepted to a high school vocational program that would enable her to sit for NCLEX-PN around the time of her high school graduation. I believe she was in the Chicago area. Maybe you could check the IL or LPN forums.

I have never heard of that. I have heard of CNA (nursing assistant) courses offered in high school, though.....you will probably have to check with both her school and your state Board of Nursing.

The high school that i went to had vocational programs such as LPN, cosmetology, auto shop, etc. It was an option for juniors and seniors and it was partnered with other schools in the area so each school had one option at their "home school." Kids who needed to go to the other schools would go for half the day after taking their other "standard" classes. You would probably just need to find out if your particular high school has a program like this.

I know of a high school in Miami, FL that offers the LPN program for their students. I can't remember the name though. I think it was a polytechnical school or something like that.

P-Tech, here in St. Petersburg has a program where high schoolers take their first six months of LPN school while still in high school. I see them in clinicals where I work. There are only a few who actually get in the program, and fewer still who stick with it. Otherwise I don't know much more about it. Maybe Googling will help.

I live in Virginia ... and some high school students take LPN classes through their local Community Colleges and Vocational Schools. It's just like your daughter taking prerequisite classes at your local CC, only they take LPN classes.

hi :) im in south florida and im currently in a high school lpn program. i take 2 high school classes in the morning each semester and nursing in the afternoon. the program started my junior year. im going into my senior yr now. I survived the first lol.. its not that bad. just alot of studying!! we also have to go during the summer, mine starts next monday. i go to class 2 days a week now and clinicals 3 times a week. wen i graduate hs next yr i am eligible to sit for the nclex-pn examination. im planning on attending a 3 yr dual admission bsn program at nsu in ft lauderdale. i definetely think your daughter should do it. great experience. intellectually and socially. she will learn a lot about nursing and be very advanced among her other classmates if she plans to pursue her RN. i do not pay for anything either the state does.. :)

I wish I had been thinking about my future when I was in high school. It would have been sooooo much easier.

a4432.....major kudos to you for taking care of business. The vast majority of kids these days don't give a rip. Your life will be so much easier in the long run just by doing this now. And YAY for it all being paid for!!!!
