Poor little (cold) Canadian

I have been working on my American accent all day, here goes..."How Y'all doing...huh?" "I'm fixin to git some infermayshun from Y'all"....sorry, couldn't resist. In a nutshell, if anyone wants to let me know any differences of the old Private/Public health care systems and opinions on what is better to work I would appreciate it. Up here (Alberta, Canada) we have a publicly funded system, a "single payer system" all I know about the states is you are private. Furthermore, we all must work in a union, we have no choice. I am not a fan of unions, or a fully public system of health care delivery. I have had an interview with a place in Modesto, California...anyway someone, please, tell me it is O.K to work in a country with silly gun control laws...please, I need to hear it.

Hey good one lol

tell me it is O.K to work in a country with silly gun control laws...

It will be OK.

Besides, California is nearly as restrictive towards gun RIGHTS as Canada is. Which means, it is very hard for the law abiding citizen to get particular guns, and many guns are banned there, but the non-law abiding have little problem getting guns....gun control at it's best.

Good to know, thanks Bob. Now what about this "earthquake" thing? I have heard about them on the Discovery channel, haha.

We can only hope the "big one" hits soon and the edge of Californina slides under the sea. Once the bastions (LA area and SF Bay Area) of liberal Californians are gone then the more rational people of the state can start charting their own course.

If the "big one" doesn't hit, don't worry. the little ones are like being on a boat in the lake and you are gently rocking with the waves. I used to sleep through most of the ones at night.

so, you see, if the just the edge falls off, it may not be a very bad place to live.;)

IF YOU TALK LIKE THAT IN MODESTO, CALIFORNIA you are gonna look pretty silly. The accent that you are taking on is from the southern states. Those who do have that kind of an accent generally lose it soon enough once they arrive in Calif. though I do once in a while let loose a "y'all" and get laughed at for it (I am not from the south but my husband was). We would say "How are you doing?" and "I would like to get some information from you".

Modesto is very beautiful, I was there a few years ago to visit.

Thanks summer, no offence...I admit the knowledge I have of the American accent is from the movies and it is probably exagerrated. But should the quote not be " How are you doing Dude?" or is the dude thing another movie myth?

Forgive me, just trying to have a wee bit of fun.

Bob, I do beleive we share the same political views. Alberta is the only province in the country that is run by the P.C.'s (our version of your Republicans...i think). We are surrounded by leftist liberals who actually run the country...It gets me fired up. anyway thanks for the visual of "The Big One".

Dude, that is so lame... :chuckle Yes, in school some of the students do use "dude" but I doubt you will find it in the hospital among coworkers -- then again...

and no offense was taken, I just didn't want you practicing the wrong accent for the wrong part of the country. Like I said, sometimes I let the y'all slip out and they laugh at me. :kiss

Cute Bob, we share the same opinion, referring to the coast falling off..lol..

oilerfan- I've heard a lot of kids say, "what's up?".. or maybe that is old hat by now..lol..

I think in the states we all have a different sounding accents depending on where we live. :)

I use "Y'all" quite a bit but I'm not from the south, just like the way it sounds, kinda friendly. :)

Y'all are funny...I just found my new word. Thanks for the fun replies Y'all...yup, I like it. It just sort of flows off the tongue eh?
