Nursing Students General Students

Published

I am/was a nursing student in new orleans. I have sat out for the past year due to family problems and depression. I decided that I was finally ready to go back to school...so...I had an appointment with the dean of my school last week. She told me that I had to start over with my nursing classes because it was a "safety issue", that I had to even re-apply to get back into the nursing school and was not guaranteed a spot. Then she told me that I had missed the deadline for the spring class (it was at the end of September), so I would have to apply for the class for next fall. I even explained to her all of my personal problems that had happened within the past year.....cheating boyfriend, grandmother got very sick and passed away, my brother had a few near death experiences from being hooked on drugs..needless to say this past year has been very hard. I understand that the rules are the rules...but this is a private school and I feel like they are just trying to get more money out of me. I have spent THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of dollars on all the pre-reqs I had to take, then the 5 classes I made it through in nursing school also. This is the major deal with me...after my meeting with the dean, I ran into an old classmate of mine. She had started in my nursing class and had sat out for a year also. So guess what......she did NOT have to start over or even re-apply to the school!!!! She DID however explain ahead of time that she was going to be sitting out, but I REALLY feel as though this is unfair bc after all...life happens and sometimes we cant control stuff. So...if it is such a "safety issue" for me as the dean said, which is why I have to start over, WHY IS IT NOT FOR MY CLASSMATE?! Does this sound messed up to anyone else? This is also supposed to be a Christian private school. I dont know what to do, who to contact, or anything. All I know is that I am very hurt. PLEASE HELP ME SOMEBODY!!!!

Hi,

I'm not sure I can help you but even at my public school they are very subjective in who they re-instate and what they make them re-take. Did you speak to someone before dropping and go through the proper channels? Is there someone above the Dean that you could contact?

FWIW I'd be very careful about the nature of personal problems that you disclose because as harsh as this may sound the ones you listed other than your Grandmother's passing would really raise some red flags, imo. Good luck and please keep us posted.

I agree. Also, I think the main reason that your friend was able to go back so easily is because she let the school know before hand. I was out of school a few years ago due to personal issues. If I hadn't informed the school that I plan on returning they would not have let me back in without reapplying.

Maybe you could talk to your Dean again? Explain that you can't afford all this and how serious you are about school?

Thank yall very much for the feedback:nuke:. I've had time to calm down a bit since then and I realize that you are right. I did not tell them ahead of time that I would not be attending for a while because I honestly did not know. I still think it is unfair that the dean said that I needed to retake the classes because it was a safety precaution...but not for my classmate. That is still kind of bothering me. I am going to apply at different schools and see what happens. I would like to attend the same school because I know how things are run there and I will be re-taking classes that I have already taken...same professors and everything...so that is a plus. I am just VERY ready to get back into school and become a RN...and don't really want to wait until next fall. I think the best thing for me to do is to contact the dean at the main campus for my school (there are 3 campuses) and see if they have the same opinion as the deal at my campus. I guess:]....thats what I'll do!
