Pinning Ceremony Ideas

Hi Tiff,

Our pinning ceremony:

Our Dean of Nursing introduces the guest speaker. We wear street clothes, most dress up. The students write a "thank you" note to recognize someone (such as "I'd like to thank my family for being there for me...") and the students vote on who will be pinning us and who will read the recognition/thank you's,(these are faculty that we vote for). We also have the president of the SNA give a speech, and we have luncheon afterwards. I'm trying to remember what else...I'll add more if I can remember.

We wear our uniforms. We have a slide show which has pictures of each student. The show starts out with a baby picture, then a graduation picture, ect. As we go up to be pinned, a pre-recorded statement is played, which is usually a dedication of the pin. We have the lamps, as well. The Nightingale Pledge is recited. We have a guest speaker. The class president gives a speech. I think the slide show is a really special touch.

I like that idea of a little statement while getting pinned. What are some things that are said?

We do plan on doing a slide show of us during our 3 yrs in school. I'm the class president, so I have to speak! Oh boy! I was the VP until our Pres resigned.

I don't want to sound dumb but what do you all do with the lamps? Hold them when you come in,light them etc. I have never been to a pinning so I have no idea what should be going on.

One of our classmates mom was a florist and she took everyones pins and put them on a small corsage. We had our pinning ceremony in the afternoon with graduation that evening. Our class president, me, gave a speech on the history of nursing. We then gathered in a semi-circle with our lamps and an instructor lite the first lamp and then that person lite the next lamp and so on and so on until all the lamps were lite. Another instructor explained the symbolism of the lamp as they were being lite. We then recited the nightengale pledge. It was all planned by the students and we think it went very well.

I like that idea with the lamps!!! One problem for us. Unfortanately our pinning ceremony is with the RN-BSN and MSN graduates. We fought to get ours seperate. NO such luck! I wonder if we should just do this with just us generic BSN's?? Hmmm I will have to think this one through.

Thanks a bunch! Anyone else have ideas? I know there are ton's here.

I envy all you guys who was able to participate (and will be able to) in a somewhat traditional ceremony. I am also graduating this May (RN) and the only kind of ceremony we'll be having is a pinning ceremony. There are talks about a pre-recorded voice to be played as we are pinned but it's not finalized yet. I am a strong believer of the cap as I believed that it is the original symbol of nursing. I have tried to talked to one of the Faculty to cap and pin me but I was disappointed as they told me that it is no longer practiced (for infection control????) and that they will not do it....The sad thing about it too is that our Student Nurse's Club President and Vice President don't seem to care about the upcoming ceremony...It's so frustrating...... Oh, do you guys know of any online place where I can buy a really nice unifrom to wear at the pinning? ( we'll be wearing all white).

Most people dedicate their pins to a family member, or they thank someone who has supported them through school. I think the lamps get lit while we recite the Nightingale Pledge.
