Perkins Loan

Does anyone know anything about Perkins loans? DO most schools automatically offer them in your financial aid packet if you're eligible? I heard someone say the other day that if you're eligible for stafford loans then you'd also be eligible for Perkins but that you have to ask for them? Does anyone know if that is true?

My school didn't say anything about the perkins when I applied for my stafford. They also didn't say anything about the stafford loan to me when I applied for a pell grant. I had to find out on my own that there was such a thing as a stafford loan.

When you complete your FAFSA, you will get a letter back letting you know ALL the stuff you qualify for, Perkins, Stafford, Pell grants, other grants, or work study. You then indicate how much/which loans you want. If you're eligible for Perkins, your award notification should indicate that. Your school financial aid person can be very helpful, try asking them!

Thank you. I am going to call them Monday and see what they say. I got my award letter awhile back that has my stafford loan and some grants but there's no perkins loan. I'm not getting enough in grants and stafford loans to cover as much as I need but I had assumed that I wasn't eligible for a perkins loan since they didn't put it in my award letter. However, someone mentioned to me the other day that she actually had to go into the financial aid office and ASK for the perkins loan. She said it wasn't on her award letter but that she needed the money so she went and ask them and they told her she could get a perkins loan as well. I will call them Monday and see what they tell me. It may be that I'm not eligible for the perkins loan but it's worth a try anyway.

I hate when schools do that. The college I went to before this one was really good about making sure that we knew about all the financial aid available to us. They were great when it came to helping find the money needed to pay for tuition and books, etc. That was the ONLY thing I liked about that college. Now the one I'm attending this year is different...I love almost everything about the school EXCEPT the financial aid office. They don't go out of their way to make sure we know what to look for or where to look. They won't help with scholarships and such. Their comment when asked about scholarships is "do a web search". :angryfire DUH! I KNEW to do that! Give me some sources that I don't already know about! It's so bad that even the instructors and dept. heads have nothing good to say about them:rolleyes:

Did y'all know that you can have your Perkins loan cancelled after working as a RN for five years? Once you graduate, you go to your FinAid office and get that set up, over a period of five years, 100% of your loan is cancelled. People who are going into education are also elgible for this program. Talk to your school to get more info!!
