"Oh, well that doesn't sound so hard."

Today, one of the women I work with was askin about the nursing program. I was telling her our schedule and explaining the classes. She's taking an anatomy class and found it interesting and is thinking about applying for the nursing program. So..I proceed to tell her about our clinicals, 3 days a week, and class the other two and tell her about the stuff we learn. She's like "oh well I don't see how that can be so hard". Are ya kiddin me?!? Just makes me mad that some people under estimate what nursing students go through. :angryfire

Perhaps in a round about way she was trying to be encouraging. Meaning....you can do this.

But you're right people think med school or engineering is tough and don't acknowledge how tough nursing school is. Which is surprising because we wear it on our sleeves.

I would say that she is more than likely jealous of you! Don't let ANYONE bring you down! Did you happen to mention thr drop out ratio to her?

Just think: if indeed she does persue nursing school, when she comes crawling to you for help, you can say... "But It's so easy! I don't know why you are having trouble!"

Or just record a lecture and let her listen to it. She'll probably change her mind REAL quick! :chuckle

I had the same comment made to me, from one of my friends. In reality, clinicals for 3 days a week and lecture for 2 days, doesn't sound all that "hard", when the average person outside of nursing works 40 hours/5 days a week. I didn't find nursing school necessarily "hard" but it did suck the life out of me. Sure, lecture was only 2 days a week, but we had to read 15 chapters to prepare for lecture, let alone try to absorb the previous lecture to get ready for an upcoming test. And there was homework on top of that, along with research papers and those darn pesky journals that we had to write every week giving an example of how we applied critical thinking to clinicals. And don't get me started on the care plans. 3 clinical days a week are exhausting alone when you put the care plans in the mix.

I guess that is the hardest thing about nursing school is the TIME committment. When I was is school we went 5 days a week. Clinicals 3 days and leture 2. And this was all day. 0800-1600 for lecture. 0630-1430 for clinicals. This is practically a full time job in itself. Not to mention most people in nursing school don't just have the luxury of only going to school. I also had to work full time 3-11 or nights at the same hospital I did clinicals in. Needless to say by the end of school, I was SICK of that place. I transfered to a sister hospital accross town after graduation.

So no, while I didnt' find the subject matter too difficult (becuase I had an interest in it). The constraints on one's time in nursing school are amazing. And I think this is what suprises most people.

I had someone say this to me as well. I think that my jaw must have hit the floor. The girl that said it was someone I will be in the program with. I think that she just said it not to let her true feelings show. Deep down I think she is scared to death. but that is only my opinion. I could be wrong. I am going into this thing with the theory that it is going to all be difficult. The extra time, the subject matter, the clinicals, all of it. That way during a 3 hour lecture, I won't be disappointed when I sit there and ask my self why I decided to do this in the first place.
