nursing tech job dilemma

hi all, maybe you can help .....

I was accepted in two hospitals here in NYC to start working as a nursing tech in 2 weeks. One is a magnet hospital, handles mostly orthopedics cases and a great environment and nice people to work for, pays great but won't allow a nurse tech to do any invasive procedures whereas the other hospital is also private, and although it pays lower than the first one, it allows the nurse tech to do invasive procedures like venipuncture, trach care and suction, EKG. The clientele for the first one are more on the upper end and the second one is more on the lower end. I presume that the workload for the second hospital is more heavy.

If you were in my position, which one are you going to choose? By the way, both of these hospitals are flexible with my sched coz i have one more semester before graduation.

thanks for your advice, i appreciate :)

Sometimes less is more. I'd go with the better hospital. You'll probably learn more from happy nurses in a good environment rather than overworked nurses in a not as good environment.

Venipuncture, EKG, and trach care will take care of themselves in time, I'm sure.

I agree with suemom2kay ... go where you are most likely to be nurtured, treated with respect, etc. Developing positive feelings toward nursing, positive professional attitudes, etc. are more important than the opportunity to practice any particular technical skills. If you need those particular skills in the future, you will learn them at that time.

Totally agree with the above posters. Since your graduation is right around the corner, soon you'll get to do all the invasive procedures you want. It sounds like the magnet hospital would be a better place to work once you recieve your RN, so why not get your foot in the door as a tech first? And no matter where you work after graduation, it's better to be going into the profession with positive experiences behind you. Good luck!

thanks everyone for the replies, i appreciate it :)

Good luck to you all!!!

I, personally, would go for the hospital that let me do more, assuming the staff isn't a bunch of jerks. I am a 'tech' at a large university hospital where I am going to nursing school, and since I am a senior nursing student, I get to do a lot! I think the practice I have got drawing blood, putting in foleys, etc, has been priceless. I could count on one hand the number of times I got to do those things in clinical. But with my job I do them every day, and I have confidence in doing procedures, plus we get the 'lower end' patients, and therefore a larger variety.

BUT-- if you know the staff is bad, DON"T GO!! A bad nurse bossing you around is the worst!

Good luck!!!

I'd go for the hospital where you can do more, too. Like the above poster said, as long as the staff aren't total jerks, the experience will be great.
