Good evening future and current nurses,

Since I am a high school junior who wants to pursue a career as a nurse, where do I get all of my nursing supplies like my stethoscope, scissors, nursing bag, etc. Am I required to order one from the school, or am I able to go out myself and buy everything that I need?

Thanks,

Faith

Some schools will have kits with supplies that you will buy in the bookstore. However, it is cheaper to buy the supplies on your own. This also gives you the advantage of being able to pick your own supplies.

Although if you are a high school junior you should not need to worry about buying supplies yet. I would focus on choosing/getting reading to apply to nursing program

If I were you, I would wait until I was actually accepted into the program before I spent money on supplies. (I don't want to put you down), but unfortunately there are a lot of people who have attempted to gain enterance into a nursing program and have failed.

The most valuable thing you could buy at this point is some old edition nursing textbooks such as nursing fundamentals or an anatomy and physiology text.

I know you are excited and ready to go out and get all your supplies! Totally understandable, but I would wait. Once you get accepted into the nursing program, you will have nursing school orientation. Trust me..They will go over anything and everything you need. My university offers a pre-packaged kit of supplies for first semester. Just as an example our kit for first semester (health assessment): sphygmomanometer, stethoscope, penlight, tuning fork, measuring tape, reflex hammer, and other things used to do a head-to-toe assessment. We use (some of) these supplies from the first semester again the next semester and so on and so on, but we also purchase addition kits for certain classes as we progress. Your school may or may not have a kit, and may or may not require you to purchase it. My university did not require you to buy their kit per-say, but all the supplies in the kit were required. Some went out and bought everything individually, but for me it was just easier to purchase the kit. It was relatively the same cost. I plan to wait until I graduate to purchase an expensive stethoscope like a Littmann. Best of luck!

My school offered these bags in our first semester. They were paid for by our tuition/lab fees.
