Nurse Shadow

I am scheduled to shadow a nurse in the ER soon. The problem is...i'm SO nervous! It's a trauma center and I have never seen any traumas except when they're on TV. Does anyone have any tips to prepare myself?

First, what is shown on TV isn't reality. Even the reality ER shows pick and choose what they'll show.

Second, there is a good chance that the nurse you will be shadowing won't even be assigned to the traumas when you're there.

Now, if you do end up seeing one? Most traumas have a designated recorder. Go stand by them. You'll get an idea of the initial flow, but won't get stepped on. And if you're worried about passing out, stand by a wall.

Finally, enjoy yourself! It's a great learning opportunity. :)

Follow closely but don't stick to her. Be there to watch, near enough to see what's going on, but out of the way enough to not get tripped over. Ask questions when there is time for the nurse to answer; do NOT ask questions when she is obviously busy. Save them for later, you have a little notebook

If asked to help, DO IT. If asked to get out of the way, DO IT. If you are taking a break, TELL HER. If you say you'll be gone for XX minutes, be back BY the time those minutes end.

Offer to help if there's something that you can help with; don't be insulted if she says no, not now. If she says yes...by golly, it's a good thing :)
