Negative posts about nursing...grrrrrrrrr!

i was just on another nursing message board, my first time there and the first post i read is this really negative view of nursing ( i attatched it at the bottom in red). warning us students to reconsider. i don't know about all of you student nurses but it really gets my goat because here i am getting excited about going into this profession and i feel a lot of people try to burst your bubble and to tell you the truth all of these negatives about nursing is really bothering me. some people can make you feel as if you're actually stepping into the pits of hell. :angryfire i understand some people are just bitter, maybe the job wasn't for them. whatever the reason, it does scare me....a lot. i have worked as a na in a nursing home. i know that this is some hard sh*it! but dang, is it really that bad? by the way, i really did not like that job because no one would help me, plus i didn't like to cry on a daily basis because i was uneducated and left on my own. i am a much too happy person for that kind of misery. i have been in many unfullfilling careers and one of the reasons i wanted to be a nurse was the teamwork and the professionalism of it. i'm starting to find out there isn't a lot of professionalism involved and a lot of bitter people. is this true? anyone else agitated and scared like me? maybe i'll feel better tomorrow. sigh. :crying2:

p.s. i've been informed copying and pasting a post is "socially incorrect", so to speak. sorry for that, so here is the link incase needed. :)

Don't get weary nor fret, have the courage and all the freedom to continue to step into other people's lives and make a difference. That's the only way you can lift up the banner of nursing profession.Never mind them.

GOOD LUCK> :) :) :)

People are people in every profession, job etc etc. People have preferences when they start out in nursing which turn into expectations, when expectations are not met, demands set in. At this point anger, frustration and sometimes depression hit a nurse. This can happen in one year or in fifteen. And this pattern happens in our own personal lives as well....listen closely to what is behind someone's burn out or anger and you will usually hear someone who says "I should, he should, he has to and they oughta" .......their beliefs are usually irrational or faulty for themselves and impose them on others

When you have a moment between nursing assignments, try to find some time to read _a Guide to Rational Living_ by Dr Albert Ellis. It's not a very long book and deals with irrational thinking of others and perhaps ourselves...which is really the core to much misery. Just knowing the therapy like I do I can see a poster who has a faulty belief that nursing students should run. That is her belief not yours.

Never run. Energy is best used rationally.

Just food for thought, I am surely not here to peddle any books, I only suggest reading that have helped me with life and with nursing/dealing with difficult people. And I have dealt with so many I think I have read every book in the bookstore!

Best to you and stay excited!!!!

Addendum

I wanted to add that even though most of experienced nurses are aware of what that poster meant in her post and supported it (thanks for pointing that out hellonurse), I wanted to make a point about the negativity of it by telling students to run. I just remember my excitement when I started nursing school and all the positive people who encouraged me and taught me about the dynamics of working with the public....or just dealing with my own bad moments when I have had enough. :specs:

Notice that the experienced nurses are far more supportive in their comments about the unhappy nurse than students are?

Students- please do not put this nurse down or make bad comments about her character.

I can identify with many of the things this nurse has said and felt. I'm sure many experienced nurses can.

Reserve your judgment until you have walked a few miles in your white nursing shoes.

Point taken. Off to the MA student boards to talk about the profession in a negative manner since I walked in their shoes for years.

Well, about all I can say for this person is, thank God she found a way to get out of nursing, because I sure don't want anyone with her attitude to be taking care of me or my family!

YES, nursing really sucks sometimes, especially in an atmosphere which emphasizes profits over patients. But a negative attitude never changed anything.........doctors WILL respect you if you know your stuff and advocate for their patients, you CAN make a decent living, and there is plenty of satisfaction to be gained from being there at just the right moment to save someone, to help someone make a tough decision, to welcome a new baby into the world, or to hold the hand of a fellow human being as he or she lets go of life.

Nursing, like anything else, is what you make it. I'm sorry there's so much negativism out there.......it's like the Peace Corps, the 'toughest job you'll ever love'. And I'm not some starry-eyed new grad, either: I've been in health care for 10 years, an RN for seven of those years, and I've gotten burned out twice, yet that's what's made me strong. :p
