Does anyone have spell check ability for MS Word 97, if so,how did you get it?

The grammer check works fine, but spell check area is grayed out and has never worked.

I went to the Microsoft Word site and you have to pay $$ over 100.00 to ask a technical question, that stinks.

Maybe there is a dictionary that needs to be downloaded, I don't know.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

THANKS A BUNCH !!!

I'm not sure which Word I have, but this is how mine is set up.

Under "tools" go to options.......then the "spelling & grammar" tab....is there a check in front of "check spelling" and "suggest corrections".....if not, check them. Hope this helps.

OR ......under "help" do you have "office assistant" or something that lists help topics?

Good luck.

StudentSandra,

Thanks for replying. Under Options the spelling area is grayed out so I can't do anything, it may be a glitch or something, grammer is the only thing that I can change.

My Office Assistant is gone too so maybe she ran off with the spell checker, well I'm going to keep working at it.

THANKS !!!

Have you tried deleting the program, and then reinstalling it? Did it come with your OS...or was this a program you added???

Brownie, thanks for replying.

I had a guy install MS Word 97 last year after my computer crashed. Before that I used Lotus, which I can still download again, but I prefer Word.

It would be great to have the disk to uninstall/install again. Maybe I can use my son's CD that came with his Gateway.

I might try that, thanks !

You're very welcome...it should work...as long as you have a CD...:).

Good Luck..

If you do have to reinstall, check at your school's bookstore, I purchased Windows 98 for only $5 since I was a student from the bookstore...it could just be a problem with the version, my Word on windows 95 had spell check, but the grammar check tab was grayed out. Computers baffle me!! Good luck!

Leslie, it's so weird, there is nothing you can do to change the gray area, tried everything in my power, so now I'm going to try the CD. Maybe if you try uninstall/install also you can activate the grammer feature. Good Luck.

I don't know which would be worse, not having spell check or not having grammer check. I really do a lot of papers so really need those features. Luckily proofing has helped. Last night I was typing a paper for my son and spelled a word wrong, it was clearly wrong, it was then I realized that spell check wasn't working.

You got a fabulous deal on Windows 98 ! I have Windows 98 and MS Word 97.
