If your teacher didn't require you to get the study guide that comes with your Med Surge book look the book up online and see if it comes with a study guide and sometimes when they don't recommend the study guide you buy it to help and you find some of your test questions came from there. Thanks for the reply. My teacher doesn't go by the textbook that was required for the class and the study guide book questions are on her quizes, not her test.

I feel your pain. I had to go condition by condition. Example: CHF, what did the instructor say, what did the text book say in regards to what the instructor said, now what did the NCLEX study book say. To top it off, I'd to the NCLEX questions on anything cardiac. After all that you'd think I'd get a pretty decent grade right...wrong! I got the lowest score one could get and still pass. I even had to remediate on the semester CAP exam (like a HESI). This was my hardest class next to psych. To heck with a good grade, I was happy to pass! What's funny now is that the med-surg stuff pops to my head easier nowadays. Through out the program you'll hear these conditions over and over again. Eventually they stick. I'm happy to say I got my RN first try in under an hour and with 75 questions, so I must have learned something somewhere...You can succeed if you never give up. Good luck, you are in my prayers.

I am having a horrible time trying to make it in my Med-Surg Class. I have tried everything from going to study groups, reading text books, getting N-Clex books, etc. Nothing seems to help. I found that some nursing schools offer tutoring, but my school doesn't. I have gone to my teacher about this concern, but I'm not getting any positive feedback. I really need some help. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks for the feedback.

Will your instructor go over any previously taken exams with you so you can find out where you are having trouble in critical thinking? Is there anyplace nearby where you can go and find out what your study habits and/or test-taking ability needs are? What kind of feedback are you getting? I mean, if it's not positive, what is it? I can only imagine how discouraged you are. I've got to pull mine up too so don't feel alone. Med-Surg is hard. I've had to realize that this playing superwife and supermom I was trying to do was not working for me. Had to make the decision to stop working so those weekends would be returned to me for study.

Try Kaplan strategy book the blue one. Hope that helps.

When the teacher returns the test, she has a review of the test and she says how much percent of the class got this right and wrong and majority of the time it's like " 40% of the class got it right." The questions make a little more sense once she goes over them. But then whenever some people ask questions in the class, the instructors are like "It's common sense" or "I thought that was a stupid question," etc. Whenver it comes to this material it is like they go over one thing, but then on the test, they do test the stuff, but they would make the situation twice as difficult and we got like two correct answers and you have to pick the best of the two and they both seem like the best answer!

Also, Jazz, thanks for the suggestion, I will try out the book! :)

Ah, wait til they start giving you 3 right answers out of 4 to pick from. Makes you crazy.

There is a CD Rom called, "Medical-Surgical Nursing Made Incredibly Easy" made by Springhouse that could be a good help to you. It's got tons of questions & answers with rationales, and it was a great study aid for me. The questions are categorized by diagnoses, which is good. It costs about $48 on Amazon, but you can sell it on Ebay when you're done. I made back what I paid for mine when I did that.
