Med Error!

But it was on my dog.

Heh.

Our old malamute is half blind and deaf, has vague doggy dementia, CHF and arthritis. She's on enalapril, tramadol, Rimadyl and Lasix BID. She gets in in liverwurst because liverwurst, to my three canine beasties, seems to be the food of the gods, and besides, no liverwurst, no pills. She spits them right out.

Well, of course everyone has to get some liverwurst with supper and it's the first thing that goes.

I put her bowl in front of Sparky.

I notified Risk Management and told DH to expect a sleepy, woozy dog tonight. The DON already knows and a mental incident report has been filed, but not documented in the nursing notes.

OMG! I hope the dog is OK.

You know, I sometimes buy liverwurst and make sandwiches with lettuce--love 'em. My cats go absolutely crazy for the stuff! I can't take it out of the frig to make a sandwich unless they get their share. What could possibly be in it that tastes so good to them? It's a bit spicy. You'd think that would turn them off. They like hot dogs too.

Have you heard of, or seen, these pill pockets that they sell? I think they have them for dogs too. The vet gave them to me for one of my cats. I just popped her pill into this soft treat, pinched the end closed and the cat couldn't gobble the thing up fast enough. She didn't even bother to chew it. Saved me an armful of scratches. I've seen them in the pet store as well.

Heeeeeeheeheehee... I heart you, Sue.

I used to work in a group of Russians (now Americans). You know the name for liverwurst in Russian?

"Cat happiness." They couldn't BELIEVE PetSmart.

Sparky's fine. He's sleeping, as I expected. A bit bradycardic, but that will pass soon.

Thanks.

:)

Pill pockets rock! Dogs just swallow them whole, so they don't even know the pills are inside.

One of my parents' dogs is on tramadol, aspirin and thyroid meds, so they make preparing and getting his meds into him a lot easier.

I actually made a cross species med error a few years ago while dogsitting for my parents :chuckle. I went to the medicine cabinet and got 2 benadryl tablets for one of the dogs and two sudafed tablets for me. I set both sets of pills on the kitchen island, got a glass of water, and then absentmindedly downed the benadryl. I realized my mistake when I went to put the dog's pills in some cheese. At least I gave myself the benadryl instead of giving the dog the sudafed and having to take her to the vet.

I'm glad your dog is okay :)

Lol, I once gave the wrong dog thyroid meds, ooops. As long as you did an incident report it will help with quality control. :D
