I have to have an article from the american journal of nursing prior to 1960, about the history of nursing...and I'm having a problem finding anything past the 90s! Any suggestions?

Where are you looking?

You probably won't find it online because it is usually only the more recent stuff is online. It takes too much time and effort and money to put all the historical information into digital form.

However, any good nursing library (physical library where they keep the actual old bound copies) would either have copies of the old AJN's in their storeroom or would be able to order the article for you through inter-library loan. Your best bet would be a library at a school that had a nursing program during that time period.

I've spent many happy hours browsing through the really old journals in the stacks of university libraries.

Talk to your local nursing school librarian. He/she should be able to locate a source. If it is close enough to visit yourself, you can get it for free. If not, you will have to pay a few dollars to order the article through inter-library loan.

Welcome to the world of library research! ... the old fashioned way ... the way we all used to do it before computers. It may seem like a hassle, but combing through literature by hand can yield a lot that gets missed in the computer age.

Very good tips above. I would also e-mail AJN and see what their suggestions are, they're very helpful to students and they may have some tips on getting access to the archives. I remember I was in a bind once an employee from there was nice enough to fax me something to save mailing time because I needed it for an upcoming project.

try academic search premire, or nexus lexus!

Yes, it was stored in our basement in the library. But, we got some info about doing research, so everything's good now:)

I'm happy to read you found it in the basement. I'll bet there is a lot of other good stuff down in the basement, too. The sad part is, most students will never find it because they will never go to the trouble to look for it as you did. I have met many student who will only use the literature that is easily available online.

Congratulations for having your extra effort pay off. I hope it leads you to further success in the future. You sound like the kind of student I would want to hire.
