How are your clinicals set up?

Is there one clinical instructor that oversees a group of students? Do you have a 1:1 preceptorship with an RN right from the start? Curious to know how your clinical day goes?

I'm starting USF this May for my BSN and while we have a team coordinator who is also responsible for teaching us in clinical labs, each student (12 in a team) is paired with an RN. I'm totally excited about this.

Tell me about your experiences...

I am second semester (Med-Surg). There are 10 of us and 1 instructor. We do total care and meds one day and then just total care the other day. She is only there when we need her and for meds. She must co-sign all meds. She shows us new procedures, and quizzes us during our down time. The quizzing is usually about something that one of us has encountered during the day, but it usually helps at test time. She is truly great. This experience is much better than last semester. My confidence has grown.

We have 10 students to one instructor. We need to go to the hospital and prep the night before for the next day. We get all of the pts info and then need to come back home and pull all the med cards, look up procedures, make a plan for the day, and make our nursing diagnoses columns. We then have clinical from 7-1:30 the next day. (Next semester twice a week for longer shifts) In the morning we find our nurse for the day and listen to report and then go over the plan of care with the nurse. We do give meds everytime with the instructor. Then we can do our cares and everything with our pt. If we are unfamiliar with something the nurses are great in helping us out. The nurses are also really good with finding us students to see other things (chest tubes get pulled out, etc) At one we report off to the nurse and go to post conference for 30 mins where all the students give a brief summary of their pt and what they learned.

USF in Tampa?

If so, can I ask you a few questions because I am applying there for June!

What has orientation been like so far? Do you know what hospital you're working in? Have you gotten your schedule? Do they tell you the books you need so far and do you know how much everything is going to cost?

lol sorry, I just neeed to know! Also, what do you expect the cost of everything will be the first year--?

Umm, do you think I have a chance if I get my GPA to a 3.7 this semester?

Thanks.
