HELP! How do I deal with an incompetent nursing program?!

Nursing Students General Students

I am starting my last (4th) semester of an accelerated BSN program. We are taking advanced med/surg and I have been really looking forward to our critical care clinical rotation. Unfortunately, I just found out that our "critical care" clinical will take place on a diabetic/stroke floor. This floor is the same floor that I completed my med/surg I (2nd semester) clinicals on, and some students even did their med/surg II clinical on this floor. I am trying to understand how this is even possible as the clinical portion does not correlate whatsoever with the lecture portion. Also, I know for a fact that other clinical groups rotate between the ICU, ER and cardiac floors at a different hospital. I have brought this concern to the attention of my campus director and even the dean of the nursing. They do not seem give one damn about the lack of correlation. Personally, I'm not even sure how this program is getting away with it & still manages to have their accreditation?!

I AM ASKING FOR ANY HELP/SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT I SHOULD DO?!

This whole situation is so messed up, and for the ridiculous amount of money that I pay for this private program I would think they would at least be able to provide a critical care clinical.....

THANKS FOR ANY COMMENTS!!!!!

It happens. It's probably not their fault either. Clinical locations are extremely difficult to come by and they can only accommodate so many students at a time.

Its just the way it works unfortunately.

Finish the program because you would probably find it impossible to transfer your credits to another school. FWIW, this type of situation often exists because of the reason stated above. Schools have to take their clinical placements where they can get them, if they can get them.

You make the most of it. If you've been taking care of 2-3 patients in previous clinicals see if you can take care of 3-4, etc. Seek out whatever you can- ask if there's a chance to shadow in one of the ICUs for a day. Ask about observing any procedures. Speak with the PTs and OTs- learn what you can from them, etc.
