Hi All! Like most of you I will be in nursing school soon and until then I want to work as a CNA in either LTC or anywhere really to gain experience. Here's my question; I will be getting CNA certified in Illinois by May. This summer I will be moving back to Cincinnati (where I am from) because my nursing school starts fall 2004. If I am liscenced in Illinois can I work as a CNA in Ohio too or do I need to apply for a liscence there too? Also, someone wrote that they worked as a psychiatric aide. I want to possibly get into the psychological aspect of nursing after school and would find it a great experience if I could find work as an aide before hand. Can CNA' s qualify to work in a mental hospital setting as well? Thanks so much!;) Louisepug

I like your sugestion of working as an aide for a while before starting school. However unless you are called to be a nurse I would suggest you look at some of the other professions in the hospital prior to starting school.

Ok everybody slow down "simma down now" I am not trying to dissuade this potential nurse from a life of demanding wortk with long hours and little thanks. I am just suggesting that she look at some of the other dpartments like radiology, ultrasonography, speech therapy, Physical Therapy, Dietician, etc. My point being nursing is something you should really consider long and hard before you devote 2 or 4 years to it especially if you have never worked as a CNA or Tech or in the medical field at all. Many of these other practices make as much or more than nurses and have much less strenuous, stressful, or manual labor requirements not to mention the accountability factor.

Lastly to all nurses that read this:And please be honest, if you knew before you started nursing school everything you know now about what your life would consist of as a nurse would you still be where you are now?

I honestly would because nursing has been good to me but, I hear plenty of complaints from nurses everyday that I wish would have chosen a different line of work!

After I posted this I began to feel like maybe I was a little harsh. Let me ask if I may two questions Of you Louisepug.

Do you now or have you ever worked in the medical field or do you have family working in the medical field?

How did you choose to become a nurse?

Louisepug, I'm not sure about the IL to OH CNA transfer. I do know the contact info for OH though:

Dept of Health NA Registry

PO Box 118

Columbus OH 43266

(800) 582-5908-Ohio only

If you give them a call they should be able to direct you. :)

Just wanted to say thanks to AmyLiz and CCRNU for replying to me. :D Both of your posts definately helped. As to the first post-er, you did bring up some very good points. But as why I decided to become a nurse? Well, I feel that I was called (in a spiritual sense.). If you want to pm me or email me I'll copy and past you the essay I sent to my nursing school on what made me decide to become a nurse. It's a little long and in depth to put here, but as far as family in the medical field goes, yes, my dad was a dentist (if that counts.) I worked as a "vet tech" aide for a short time, and I have been exposed to hospital settings a great deal of my life, and have worked with many handicapped people in more of a counseling setting. I appriciate your advice. Right now I'm actually reading a book called, "Nurse." Don't know if you've heard of it, and it's a little out dated, but still portrays the absolute unbiased truth about nursing. I'd actually like to go into Hospice nursing. Do you know anyone who does this? I know that there's a thread on it, but just curious. Well, like I said, Thanks again! Louisepug
