I just finished my first semester of an ASN RN program with a B+. 5 weeks off and the med-surg begins. :lol2:

I have been told that this is the make or break semester, very intense. Looking for some advice on how to hit this semester head on, and what kind of material is involved.

I will be starting an ASN program in Aug. What resource books do you recommend for first semester?

Success in med-surg comes with a solid understanding of Physiology. Review your old notes, especially blood flow through the heart, respiratory, kidney function, digestive system, etc. If you know how everything is supposed to function properly, then you'll understand what's going wrong when your patient has heart failure, COPD, diabetes, etc. The students in our class who struggled in med-surg also struggled in Phys during pre-reqs. This is the course where people tend to fail out.

I couldn't agree more. KNOW YOUR A&P. You need a solid A&P foundation to do well in med surg. You will be thrown a bunch of disease processes with nursing care each week that all revolve around knowing the human body. GL and congrats.

[h=4]Fundamentals Success : A Q&A Review Applying Critical Thinking to Test Taking, 3rd Edition ISBN 13: 978-0-8036-2779-6[/h]It helped a lot with getting used to the way test questions are worded and their rationales.

If you had to choose one of the books to primarily study from, which one would you choose? Pathophysiology or A&P book?

Pathophysiology for each organ system (esp. cardiac, respiratory, digestive, etc.). Physiology - know blood flow through heart, acid/base balance in blood, pancreatic enzymes, kidney function, etc.
