I'm having trouble with several of the tricky Fundamentals of Nursing questions. There are students in my class who seem to just "get it." In talking with them, they seem to rarely struggle when choosing between the best and second best answer. I'm not hating over here, but I'd like to hear from other students who went from struggling to really getting it, and how they changed their thought process.

For example, one thing I've learned on here is that when choosing between answers, the first thing a nurse does is assess. I try to keep that in mind when looking at distractors.

You just kind of learn to do it. You'll also be able to differentiate between tests the teacher made up and those pulled from a vetted test bank. If it's a teacher made test figure out the teacher's personality and what they would do first. That'll be your answer on that question. School answers don't always apply to the real world so don't try and put yourself in the scenario. Just answer it as a student.

You are correct to use the nursing process to guide you in taking your tests. ADPIE. But always factor in Maslow's and ABC's. i.e. a patient in respiratory distress with an intervention answer will be a higher priority than an assessment answer. And use your NCLEX review book for practice questions!

This is so, so true! Excellent advice. This is exactly what has been working for me.

I Hated fundamentals. Now I'm in my 2nd quarter, Med-Surg, and my study time has been cut in half, or more! I feel like all that fundamentals stuff makes much more sense; I'm totally making connections.
