First week- will I die of boredom?

This is my first week of ADN nursing school and already I'm wondering if I will make it. Not because its hard or overwhelming, but because the intro to nursing classes are so unbelievably boring. Today we role played communication situations and I felt like I was in kindergarten. Nursing theory? That **** has to be BS. Someone tell me that it gets more interesting. Even hard would be good at this point. Yes, I have 20+ years of CNA experience and aced my pre reqs, have walked through the medical system with critically ill family, and have taken a ton of other college courses but I wanted to come into this humble and willing to learn. I want a challenge. I'm suddenly more worried about being bored than about being challenged. I don't have the option of another program or PA school or whatever right now. Advice appreciated. Anything so I don't fall asleep in class and never wake up. :dead:

You have conflicting statements when you say "I want to come into this humbly" and the next you say "I'm looking for a challenge" To be humble would require that you don't judge the worthiness of what your being taught and just learn. You are actually the one being challenging of the curriculum. Being humble would say " I need to improve on my communication skills and this is an opportunity to do so." This statement goes beyond your skills and puts you in a mind set that allows you to grow.

Much of the intro stuff is boring. Nursing theory is boring. Just jump through the hoops. Nursing school is time consuming and is full of things that waste your time.

I think one can be too humble too. I'm humble in that I know I have a lot to learn and don't know everything, but I'm not naive enough to take in new information without critiquing it and its presentation.

All the nursing fundamental stuff is sooo boring! It does get better. Hang in there.

I totally disagree, I have learned the most when I stop judgment on the person who is teaching me and am open to new ideas. I won't shut my mind off because something I'm being taught doesn't taste like peaches and cream the first times its introduced to me.

The idea would be to trust your program, trust the process and learn as much as you can. You have 20 years of cna experience, that can be a limiting factor in your case, because you think you know what your doing as a professional cna. As a nurse you don't know anything yet and to assume that what you are learning is not applicable is short sighted and narrow minded.

Its dull as dirt. Sorry. That doesn't mean I won't get an awesome grade and memorize all of it, though, but this pseudo psychology BS is pointless drivel. I'll eat my words if I ever find myself wondering if I've done all five levels of caring, but I doubt it. Not all of it is pointless, but the relevant parts could be taught in one day.

Thanks. I need encouragement. I've worked so hard to get here and its - how do I say it- anti-climatic.

Keep us updated I would love to know if it ends up getting interesting for you.

I'm sure it will and I'll envy this "down" time. Until then, I need to make it through this. Yes I know I'm whining.

It will definitely get harder. Just wait until you hit med surge and have to review your cardiac lectures, or oncology, or endocrine disorders! Then try balancing that with exams every other week, clinicals and a job. Don't worry, nursing school is a great major to be challenged in, never let yourself feel too confident so you're not studying, studying, studying!

only one semester left for this girl, good luck :geek:
