First test of quarter

Hey all,

Today was my first test of 2nd quarter. Let me tell you, it blew most of us away. I know I passed, but the questions seemed to be just be pulled out of the air!

I know that nursing school tests are hard because they want the BEST answer. But these tests didn't reflect the outcomes really or what we read/heard in lecture. We did a big unit of pharmacology in lecture, reading, and on the computers. We were told to study all forms of the laxatives exhaustively. There was ONE question of laxatives on the test. We were told to study the drug laws, schedules, pregnancy categories, etc... in depth. There was NO question on that. I mean I know the info is good to have but why is it not on the test??

The truth is we have no idea what is REALLY gonna be on the test. They have these test assessment things where we can learn how to decipher a question. Well, I know how to decipher a question. There are some questions in which you either know the answer or don't. A test-taker assessment isn't gonna help for that.

Thanks for letting me vent....now I just wait for the grade!

hey zach, i know how you feel, we had our first test of the 2nd semester yesterday also. :confused:

90 questions on 350 pages of reading on antepartal & intrapartal. another with 80 questions over 275 pages on postpartal & neonate next monday.

zach, don't know what to tell you, i don't worry about what they "say" is gonna be on the test. i "try" to read everything listed in the syllabus, i figure it is all fair game. do you have study guides to go with your books? you know, the kind with the answers in the back of the book. i just fill in the answers from the back & read all that too.

i know you know this zach, but usually you can eliminate 2 of the answes, then if i still don't know, i try to see if one of the remaining answers has something in common with the 2 i already knocked out.

sorry i'm rambling, but that's just how my brain feels today. :o

ZACH, I am sure you did fine. I understand what you mean though about what they tell you to study for and then there is nothing about it on the test. It happens all the time at my school.

Sandra, I am assuming you are studying maternal-newborn in lecture right now. We are too and we are having our first test over intrapartal and newborn on monday so I have been busy studying and then we will have antepartal and postpartum test in 2 weeks.

We have done so much the past 2 weeks as I am sure everyone here has. We have been sitting in lecture everyday 800-400 except fridays it has been 12-4 we have been fed with so much information and going from topic to topic it has been REALLY hard to keep up with all the reading but I do the best I can and at least skim and read the reviews and boxes . Well, next week it will let up a little since we will start clinicals next week.

We can do this everyone.

I don't have any study guides because I hate buying "optional" books and I don't think they would help me enough. Like the reading is important but they only test off the reading a little bit so I don't know...

Ante and Intrapartum sounds really interesting. L&D is so not my area but it still sure sounds interesting for me. I don't have that till quarter 5.

I guess all I can do is what you said, just read all the material and study all notes and know that it's fair game, all of it. But often, we as students, memorize things that we think are gonna be on the test. Oh well who knows...

BTW, got my test results back today...97%!!!! :) I feel better.

the study guides were not listed as "optional" for us, but i think only a handful of us use them.

l&d is not my area either, actually i have been excused from the ob rotations. personal reasons. :o

congrats on the 97% we are both soooo anal about our grades.

We're starting out the quarter with maternity-newborn too. In fact, our first lecture today is on fetal conception and development.

Zach, I know just what you mean about the tests. This is what I do. I try really hard to actually do all the reading. Most of the time I do. I take notes at lecture, and really focus on the things the prof talks about.

We also have these things called exam blueprints, where we get a listing of all the topics and how many questions on each topic will be on the test. That way, you can sort of focus your studying more to include what will be worth the most on the exam.

Lastly, it never hurts to ask the prof what is going to be on the test. We do it all the time. They usually laugh at us, and then give us some good hints.
