Nursing Students General Students

Published

Does anyone know of good scholarships or grants for nursing students. Maybe even loans. I have to drive 60 miles each day just to attend the nursing classes in the fall. I am getting a pell and loan. With 3 kids and a house its just too little. We have already been warned by our instructors not to try to work while in the program. I really don't know what choice I have. My local hospital only will pay for tuition if you receive no other finaid. I know about the Dept. of Health and Human Services nursing scholarship but it seems like a person's chance of receiving it is very slim. They got 5000 applications and only made 92 awards. One would think with a nursing shortage they would try to do more than that. I guess I am just venting about how I am going to pay for nursing school. A stipend would be nice for Gas, daycare, care to be fixed. Its that the only program around like that.

Thanks for any help someone can give

Hi,

In response to your post, the best thing may be to sit down with a financial aid advisor at your school to see what other options are there. They should also be able to point you in the direction of some scholarships and how to apply. There are also alternative student loans for students who's resources do not meet their cost of attendance. I know where I will be going to school here in Texas, they try to find enough financial aid for you to take care of tuition/fee/supplies as well as your living expenses. With the package they made for me, I would be able to attend school comfortably w/o working. Good luck!

You mention you have a house - is there any equity you can tap? That's what I ended up doing - refinancing our house to pull out equity so that the family will have something to live off of while I'm in school.

I rent my house. In the area I stay in housing is expensive to buy. I have been looking at all my options including not going to nursing school and finishing up the last sem. of my current degree but I know I would never be happy in that field. I have made an appt. with the local WIA agency and I have been cancelled twice by them so I just really want to find another scholarship or loan program b/c they seem a little iffy to me. Anyone know of a person's chance of getting the Nursing Scholarship of the Nurse Reinvestment Act?

I can relate... if I get into the nursing program, I'll be driving 120 miles/day (60 miles each way) to class, plus I have 2 little kids (and will have no job - going to be hard going from being the sole breadwinner of the family to having zero income). :o

What state do you live in? Maybe your state offers some sort of nursing scholarships/stipends? Have you checked with all the hospitals in your area/state?

What's that big nursing scholarship... pays tuition + a stipend.... they award it first to those with 0 EFC.. BHPR, something? (I remember looking at the website and applications weren't available until April)

The HRSA is the scholarship that I really need b/c I have an EFC of zero. It just seems like the chances of me getting is slim but I am defintely pray God blesses me with it. I live in Arkansas and I am trying to find some place that may help. All of the local places are of no help. I don't want to give up quite yet though.

I know that as far as daycare is concerned there should be some help in that. Check with the Department of Health and they should have programs or tell you of programs that help with daycare. I checked into one in my state and it depends on how much you make, but it cut my daycare expenses from $15.00 a day to $3.00 a day for a full day and $1.50 for a half day per child. It is really helpful, especially when going to school. It includes the entire time at school and driving time. Hope this helps.:)
