Expelled :(

Hello,

I was recently expelled from nursing school due to the fact that I ticked off the dean of nursing. The reasons that were given were "unprofessional behavior" despite the fact that I had a great clinical record and a 4.0 GPA. I have one semester left.

First off, for those of you in this situation, I would like to recommend Excelsior College, which will take anyone who has finished at least half an ASN program (or has an LPN). Because thier program is exam-based, the worse case is that you will have to take a bunch of exams again, but there are no lectures or clinicals. (I just could NOT sit through my OB clinical again! Or any other of them for that matter.)

But the real reason that I am writing is that I am very angry and sad about the situation. I feel that my future was spat apon by a few people who met me once and didn't give a damn about me or my possible career. I have worked in health care for some time now and my coworkers have refused to let me give up. These people, who have worked with me for years, strongly believe that I will make a wonderful, principled, and very professional nurse!

Anyway, I was hoping to hear from other people who are in this position, or who have been in the past. I have heard a lot of stories from people who were singled about and expelled for silly reasons. I would love to get some input.

Well first of all I am sorry about your situation. I have not personally been through it, but a classmate of mine was close to expulsion for another reason, that did not seem fair. She went above the nursing program (with her lawyer I believe) and was not expelled, and finished smoothly. Unfortunately once you have a run-in with the faculty your usually watched very closely, and they are often waiting/wanting you to slip. Not that it is any of my business, but I can't help but ask. You can't sit through any clinicals? What part of nursing are you interested in? Sorry, just curious!

Is there any sort of appeal process you can try, or getting a lawyer? I'm sorry this happened. I have nightmares over these types of situations. I don't have any stories or advice for you, sorry.

I'd start with the dean of the whole school, to request an appeal. The next step is an attorney. Unless the nursing dean can prove you clearly violated the written code of conduct, they need to reconsider.

Actually it was the dean that I ticked off, and so going through her isn't an option. It is a small program, with the higher ups "in each other's pockets", so going up isn't really an option. This is actually the second time that I have been expelled-- after the first time, they were just waiting for me to slip or do soemthing that could be seen as a slip. (The first time I went through the internal commitee who didn't even bother with the usual second follow-up with me after hearing my side of the story, they were so quick to reinstate me into the program.) This time, I am just sick of the program and the teachers, and so when I found Excelsior I decided that it would be eaiser and less stressful to go through them.

MissBrittney, to answer your question, Excelsior requires that you have a LPN or half a year of ASN. Most programs actually give you more clinicals then is required, so they are able to get away with the online format. You do have to attend a sort of "clinical weekend" where all your clinical skills are tested in a simulated environment. The big downside of the program is that about ten states have restrictions that are specific to the school. Wshington state requries 1000 hours of RN expereince for an Excelsior grad before you can work there. VA doesn't allow Excelsior at all. This makes me nervous, but it is still better then the alternative.

Does Ohio accept Excelsior?

Does Ohio accept Excelsior?

Looks like they do. Here is a list of states with exceptions and the exceptions that they have:

Note that most states will "take" an Excelsior grad, but they need experience first (ranging from about 400-2000 hours of experience in another state).

Iam in the situtation abt be expelled accoring to what the shcool consider inappropraite behavior, any advice on what I can do. Frusterating part is that I am in my last semester of nursing program and half way done with it.I have taken peads, maternirty, behavorial, med surge 1 and 2 and in the last course advances nursing.

does anyone a school with similar cirriculum decscrobes above who would accept me?

I would appreciate any input in the situation, thank you.

what type of attorney did your friend obtain? any idea if the process was long? how much was the cost? was she able to finsih the program on timely manner during the leagl battle? I would appreciate any input.

I don't really know the details. We weren't really friends, just classmates. She didn't get too detailed when she told me, but I believe he was already her attorney. I don't think it was a long process though, and I wouldnt even consider it a process. She and her attorney (I don't know if they made an appt. together, letter, phone call, or what) contacted someone that oversee's all of the programs at our community college, and I am assuming they presented facts, opinions, maybe threats. I also don't think it was that difficult because I remember her telling me that the person they went to did not like the nursing director and/or staff, so it was like playing mom against dad.

is there anyway u can pass her my email so she may contact me or pm me her contact information. I am in dire need of assiatance for possible expulsion.

Faith, do you feel comfortable about telling us what happened?

I would also suggest talking to your advisor or someone else at the program that you trust. They can give you advice about the appeals process that I am pretty sure is in place at any school.

Finally, I would recommend asking locally for suggestions for a laywer. There are people who specialize in educational law. Don't pick one off the TV or the one with the biggest ad in the yellow pages and they will probably do fine.

Oh yes, and WRITE everything down that led up to the incident. You will need this.

Finally, if the worst does happen, look into Excelsior. They should be able to help you out.

Good luck. :(
