current job dilemma

Hi guys, so I'm a current nursing student who is looking for a job while in school. Towards the end of last semester I got a job as a server in a restaurant which end up not working out. So now I'm back looking for a job, specifically one in the hospital. I'm looking for pct jobs positions but they're hard to get. I have some contacts who work in the hospitals but I'm not sure if they are able to help me. Also the nurse student internship position is mainly available for the bsn students( I'm adn student). I see an openings position for dietary aide is available , I wondering if i should apply for that , work there for sometime and then retry to get a pct position in this hospital. The dietary aide position is weekend only, which is good because I can only work weekends. But I'm also worried about pay. I don't want to work a lot of hours and still not be able to pay my bills which causes me more stress that would affect my school work. Its about 10 hours per shift, Saturday and Sunday. Anyone have experience doing this and then getting a pct job. Its important for me to get a pct job soon, because the closer I get to graduation , the less inclined they would be to hire me. Any other position your recommend that I could go for?

Pcna is a better job for a nursing student. You need patient care experience to look good to employers when you're applying as an RN.

Yes I know that which is why I'm applying for these, but its hard to get, some even require emt certification which i can not get. The best way to get a job is through contact, but they don't seem to be helping me. I am trying to form new contacts though, maybe those can help out

From my experience, we never have interviewed the dietary aides who finish nursing school for RN positions even though they work for the hospital. We have interviewed PCT, unit secretary, transporters, student interns and volunteers for our new grad program. However, you pretty much have to be a standout or know someone in order to get interviewed nowadays. Good Luck!

I said I was looking to work as a dietary aide to get the pct position. I have family member who know nurses, my sibling actually knows a nursing director but does not seem keen on helping me.

We have hired people from dietary and transport and housekeeping into the CNA role before at my place of employment. Not that crazy to try to get into a system in any capacity. Go for it!

Well i have just decided to apply for everything, from transporter to dietary aide to pcna, the acute care techs require more than a cna. The hospitals also require completion of patient technician program.

A girl who worked dietary was hired directly after graduation onto the med/surg floor. She did clinicals on PP and I got to know her, before I knew it, she was done and floating from medsurg down to our unit to work.

Getting into the hospital no matter the capacity is a step in the right direction. Once in, you will learn who to talk to and you will have an advantage.

Of course, pct is the ideal but do what you can!

Thanks , I just got a reply for 1 pct job and patient sitter job and my application was denied. Still waiting to hear a reply from the transporter job and diartary aide job

It NEVER hurts to get your foot in the door. Some positions are for internal candidates only, so you might be able to get in that way. Good luck and keep applying. Even if you start in LTC as an aide and then transfer to a hospital once you have some experience behind you. Good luck!

Thanks, I honestly think that where I may end up starting. It's very hard to get the pct jobs, they all want experience and more training. From what I have been told, a lot of these positions are mainly for internal candidates but they still post openings on the website to make it look like they're hiring
